Uzodimma's 2027 Ambition Derailed by Court Ruling Setback

A Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered INEC to remove Governor Hope Uzodinma's name and replace him with Rochas Okorocha as the APC senatorial candidate for Imo West, citing irregularities in the primary election. The court found that Uzodinma did not win the primary, and ruled in favor of Okorocha, who had challenged the outcome. A Federal High Court in Abuja has issued a significant ruling, ordering the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to remove the name of Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodinma, as the senatorial candidate for the Imo West Senatorial District. The court explicitly directed INEC to replace Uzodinma with former governor Rochas Okorocha as the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for the upcoming 2027 general elections.

Justice Obiora Egwuatu, who presided over the case, determined that Governor Uzodinma did not lawfully win the May 18 primary election conducted by the APC and monitored by INEC. The court consequently mandated the APC to submit Okorocha’s name to the electoral body as its rightful candidate. The dispute originated from conflicting claims regarding the outcome of the APC primary for the Imo West Senatorial District, with Okorocha challenging Uzodinma’s initial recognition as the party’s candidate.

Okorocha contended that the outcome announced in favor of the incumbent governor did not accurately reflect the results of the primary monitored by INEC. While Uzodinma was initially declared the winner with 230,464 votes against Okorocha’s 1,098 votes, a separate document later circulated, purporting that Okorocha secured 150,780 votes. Justice Egwuatu, in delivering his judgment, held that the evidence presented before the court conclusively proved that Okorocha garnered the majority of votes cast at the poll and should therefore be declared the winner.

The court further restrained Uzodinma from presenting himself as the APC senatorial candidate for the 2027 election, affirming that he did not win the party’s May 18, 2026 primary. Justice Egwuatu declared Okorocha as the lawful winner of the primary, stating that Uzodinma’s nomination breached Sections 29 and 32 of the Electoral Act and failed to comply with the APC’s guidelines for conducting primary elections. He described the party’s act of forwarding Uzodinma’s name to INEC as unlawful and fraudulent, asserting that “the publication of Hope Uzodimma’s name by INEC as the winner of the primary election is wrongful and unlawful.” The judge ordered INEC to set aside Uzodinma’s name and restore Rochas Okorocha’s name as the APC Senatorial candidate for Imo West.

Justice Egwuatu also criticized INEC for accepting Uzodinma’s nomination despite what he termed
