US-Iran Nuclear Talks Implode: Trump Retaliates with Hormuz Blockade as Diplomatic Crisis Deepens

High-level diplomatic negotiations between the United States and Iran in Islamabad, Pakistan, concluded without a resolution after a marathon 21-hour session that spanned from Saturday through Sunday morning. Both sides reported a failure to reach an agreement, with the primary sticking points revolving around Iran’s nuclear program and a profound lack of trust between the two nations.
According to US Vice President Vance, who led the American delegation, the talks did not yield a deal to permanently end the ongoing conflict, a development he characterized as "bad news for Iran much more than it’s bad news for the United States of America." Vance stated that the US presented its "final and best offer," which he insisted was "quite flexible" and accommodating, but Iranian negotiators refused to accept the terms. He expressed disappointment that the US was unable to make any headway despite President Trump's directive to negotiate in good faith.
A central point of contention was Iran's nuclear ambitions. Vance revealed that Iran did not commit to forgoing the building of a nuclear weapon, even after hours of intense discussions. The US sought a "fundamental commitment of will for the Iranians not to develop a nuclear weapon not just now, not just two years from now but for the long term," a commitment they did not receive. Vance maintained consistent communication with President Donald Trump throughout the talks, as well as with other senior officials including Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, Secretary of Treasury Scott Bessent, and Adm. Brad Cooper of US Central Command.
On the Iranian side, state media quickly placed blame on the US, describing its demands as "excessive" and ambitious. A correspondent for the semi-official Tasnim news agency reported from Islamabad that the failure was due to "US overreach and ambitions." Speaker of the Iranian parliament, Ghalibaf, echoed this sentiment in a post on X, emphasizing Iran's goodwill and determination but also a profound distrust stemming from "the experiences of the two previous wars." Ghalibaf stated that the Iranian delegation put forward 168 "constructive, forward-looking proposals," but the opposing side ultimately failed to gain their confidence. He added that the US understood Iran's logic and principles, and it was now up to America to decide if it could earn Iran's trust. Ghalibaf underscored that diplomacy served as "another method alongside military struggle to secure the rights of the Iranian nation," vowing to continue efforts to consolidate the "achievements of the 40-day national defense of Iranians."
Beyond the nuclear program, the Strait of Hormuz emerged as a significant sticking point. This vital waterway, through which approximately 20% of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG) typically passes, was a key element of the conditional ceasefire in place between the two countries regarding safe passage of ships. Iranian deputy parliament speaker Haji Babaei declared the Strait a "red line" for Tehran, asserting that it is completely under Iran's control and that its tolls must be paid in Iranian rials, as reported by Mehrs News Agency. In contrast, US President Donald Trump stated on Truth Social that the Strait would "soon be open." US Central Command also reported that two Navy destroyers had transited the Strait as part of a mission to clear it of sea mines. However, Iran denied these claims, with its Revolutionary Guards warning that "any attempt by military vessels to pass through the Strait of Hormuz will be dealt with severely," according to AFP, citing state broadcaster IRIB.
Despite the lack of common ground on core issues such as uranium enrichment limits, verification mechanisms, sanctions relief, and regional security, both sides have indicated that the door remains open for future negotiations. However, no new round of talks has been scheduled following this unsuccessful high-level meeting.
