About 300,000 Frigidaire mini fridges, sold exclusively at Target, have been recalled nationwide by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) due to significant fire and burn hazards. This recall is an expansion of a previous Frigidaire mini fridge recall issued last July, which affected approximately 634,000 units sold at various retailers. The expanded recall was prompted by six reports of these specific mini fridges catching fire, leading to property damage and posing a direct burn risk to consumers.
The initial recall, launched in July, encompassed a broader range of Frigidaire mini fridges and was sold at additional retailers including Walmart and Amazon. This earlier recall generated at least 26 reports of the mini fridges smoking, sparking, burning, melting, overheating, and ultimately catching fire. These incidents resulted in property damages totaling over $700,000, and two consumers also reported experiencing smoke inhalation injuries.
The products specifically affected by the most recent recall, manufactured by Curtis International and sold exclusively at Target, are identified as the "Frigidaire six-can mini fridge in red." Consumers can confirm if their unit is recalled by checking for Model number EFMIS121 and serial numbers falling between A2001 and A2310.
For the initial recall from last July, several other Frigidaire mini fridge models were included: Model number EFMIS129 (with serial numbers between A2001 and A2308, excluding models EFMIS129-B or EFMIS129-C), Model number EFMIS137 (with serial numbers between A2001 and A2312), Model number EFMIS149 (with serial numbers between A2001 and A2308), and Model number EFMIS175 (with serial numbers between A2001 and A2310). These models were responsible for the majority of the reported incidents and damages.
If you own any of the recalled Frigidaire mini fridges, it is imperative to stop using it immediately. The CPSC advises consumers to unplug the product, cut the power cord, and write "Recall" in permanent marker on the front door of the unit before disposing of it. Additionally, affected consumers should register for a refund on the Curtis International website to claim their reimbursement.
