A tragic incident at Filmhouse Cinemas IMAX in Lekki, Lagos, resulted in the deaths of two individuals in the early hours of Saturday, August 29. The attack involved a machete-wielding man who assaulted two security guards at the cinema's car park, leading to a swift and fatal escalation of events.
The Lagos State Police Command confirmed the fatalities, identifying one of the security guards as a victim who was stabbed to death. The suspected attacker, who was later mobbed by an enraged crowd, also succumbed to his injuries. Police spokesperson SP Adebisi Abimbola noted that another security officer sustained injuries during the assault.
The incident unfolded shortly after patrons, who had attended a late-night screening of the film 'Odyssey' that concluded around 2 a.m., began leaving the cinema. Sports journalist Buchi Laba, an eyewitness, described encountering a chaotic scene with blood everywhere. He recounted taking two injured security officers to the hospital, one with a chest wound and the other stabbed in the back. Laba later confirmed that one of the guards died and was informed that the assailant had also died at the scene, describing it as one of the worst experiences of his life.
Reports indicate that the attacker, who appeared destitute, attempted to gain entry into the cinema but was prevented by security personnel, prompting him to become violent. While the specific trigger for the attack remains under police investigation, the Lagos State Police are actively working to establish the full sequence of events.
As part of the ongoing inquiry, the chief security officer of the cinema has been taken into custody. Police are also seeking to obtain and review CCTV footage from the premises to corroborate eyewitness accounts, understand the exact circumstances surrounding the deaths, and determine if any other individuals were involved.
Filmhouse Group, in a statement, expressed deep sadness over the security breach, confirming that the incident occurred outside its regular operations. In response, the company has implemented additional precautionary measures and increased security across all its locations, reassuring customers and staff of their safety and wellbeing. Filmhouse also commended two brave individuals for their courage in helping to contain the situation and restore safety, stating their commitment and bravery would not be forgotten. The identities of the deceased have not yet been released.
