Urgent Alert: South Africa Recalls Baby Formula Amid Toxin Contamination Fears!

The National Consumer Commission (NCC) in South Africa has issued an alert to consumers regarding the recall of specific Nutricia baby formula products. This action follows a report from the manufacturer, Nutricia southern Africa, indicating a potential contamination with a toxin.

In an official media statement released last Friday, the commission detailed the products involved in the recall: Nutricia Aptamil Nutribiotik 2 (800g) and Nutricia Aptajunior Nutribiotik 3 (800g). A total of 2,989 units of these products are affected by the recall.

Nutricia southern Africa informed the NCC that a raw material utilized during the production process might contain traces of cereulide. Cereulide is a toxin known to pose health risks, including symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and abdominal cramps, particularly at high exposure levels.

The affected products were distributed nationally by United Pharmaceutical since August 2025 and were sold at major retailers including Dis-Chem and Clicks. Furthermore, the manufacturer confirmed that these products were also exported to Botswana and Namibia.

Consumers should check the batch numbers of their products. The specific affected batches include Aptamil Nutribiotik 2 (800g) with batch numbers 20260911 and 20261209, and Aptajunior Nutribiotik 3 (800g) with batch number 20261209.

The NCC has stated that it is actively monitoring the recall process to ensure full compliance with the Consumer Protection Act and to safeguard consumer rights. Consumers who have purchased any of the affected products and require further information are advised to contact Nutricia southern Africa directly through its official website or careline.
