Unveiled: Drake’s Engineer Spills Secrets on Original ‘ICEMAN’ & Unreleased Tracks!

Drake has made a significant impact on the rap game with the release of his three albums: ICEMAN, HABIBTI, and MAID OF HONOUR. Following their debut, ICEMAN has demonstrated remarkable chart performance, maintaining its position atop the Billboard 200 for three consecutive weeks since its release on May 15.

OVO affiliate and Drake's sound engineer, Noel, provided an exclusive look behind the scenes of Drizzy’s creative process on Thursday, June 4. Noel revealed the original tracklists for the ICEMAN, HABIBTI, and MAID OF HONOUR trifecta. These insights were shared through three distinct spreadsheets in the studio, detailing sections for mix, clean, approval, master, and specific notes for each track, offering fans a unique glimpse into the album's development.

The tracklist for ICEMAN remained largely consistent when compared to its final version. However, a notable change involved the elongation of the Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 hit from its original title of “Janice” to “Janice STFU.” Additionally, the track “Firm Friends” appears to have possibly been renamed from an earlier version titled “Can’t Play Switzerland.”

In contrast, the album MAID OF HONOUR did not undergo any changes to its tracklist, preserving its initial composition. HABIBTI, however, saw some modifications, with the track “Vital” being swapped out for “Classic.” Furthermore, “I’m Spent,” featuring Loe Shimmy, was identified as a late addition to the project, indicating last-minute creative decisions.

The song “Vital” holds historical significance for diehard OVO fans, as it has roots dating back to Drake’s performance of the track during his Boy Meets World Tour in New Zealand in 2017. Despite its fan appeal and early exposure, “Vital” never received an official release but eventually surfaced online through a leak around 2020, becoming a highly sought-after ‘grail’ for many.

ICEMAN further solidified its chart dominance by earning a second week atop the Billboard 200, accumulating 225,000 equivalent album units in the U.S. for the week ending May 28. This achievement marks Drake’s sixth project to successfully spend multiple weeks at the summit of the prestigious chart.

Adding to Drake's impressive run, “Janice STFU” also secured the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 for a second straight week. This particular track earned Drizzy his 14th Hot 100 No. 1 hit, a remarkable accomplishment that allowed him to break a tie with Michael Jackson for the most chart-toppers among male soloists.
