Uganda Rocked: Police Probe Shocking Murder of Afrigo Band Founder Moses Matovu

Veteran musician and the esteemed leader of Afrigo Band, Moses Matovu, has tragically died following an alleged attack by unknown assailants in Kampala on Thursday morning. The incident occurred at Kibuli Market Zone B within Makindye Division, where Matovu was reportedly assaulted. He was subsequently rushed to Kibuli Hospital for treatment but regrettably succumbed to his injuries.

Kampala Metropolitan Police (KMP) spokesperson Rachael Kawala confirmed that police at Kabalagala have registered a case of suspected murder concerning Matovu's death. In a statement issued on Thursday, Kawala explicitly stated, "Police at Kabalagala have registered a case of suspected murder involving Matovu Moses, a musician with Afrigo Band." The police further indicated that Matovu was attacked by unknown assailants, leading to his hospitalization and eventual demise.

A dedicated task team from the police is currently at the scene, actively conducting investigations to thoroughly establish the circumstances surrounding this deeply unfortunate incident. Efforts are also underway to identify and apprehend the suspected assailants responsible for the attack. As of now, police have not disclosed any potential motive for the attack nor have they identified any suspects, with investigations ongoing.

Matovu's untimely death brings an abrupt and sorrowful end to the life and career of one of Uganda's most influential figures in live music history. He was unequivocally central to the Afrigo Band from its very formation in 1975, playing a pivotal role in establishing and nurturing it into one of Uganda's longest-running and most enduring musical groups. His leadership was a defining factor in Afrigo's significant contributions to Uganda's music industry, as he was instrumental in steering the band, maintaining discipline among members, and fostering successive generations of musicians.

The band's remarkable survival and sustained prominence across multiple generations were closely associated with Matovu's steadfast leadership. Under his guidance, Afrigo successfully navigated through periods of profound political instability, adapted to significant shifts within the music industry, and persevered despite the departure or death of several of its original members, consistently performing and attracting new talent. Matovu was also crucial in cementing Afrigo's unique identity and ensuring its longevity after the group was initially formed by eight young musicians. The band subsequently became a ubiquitous fixture on Uganda's vibrant entertainment scene, renowned for its captivating performances at major hotels, clubs, and venues, alongside extensive tours that reached Ugandan communities abroad.
