Trump's Grand UK State Visit: King Charles Welcomes as Red Arrows Soar

Donald Trump embarked on an unprecedented second state visit to the United Kingdom, hosted by King Charles III at Windsor Castle, a historic event marked by elaborate royal pageantry and significant public and political discourse. The visit, spanning from September 17 to 19, 2025, underscored the strong diplomatic ties between the US and the UK, even amidst various controversies.
Upon his arrival at the Windsor estate via Marine One helicopter, Mr. Trump and First Lady Melania Trump were initially greeted by the Prince and Princess of Wales in the Royal Kitchen Gardens at Frogmore. This informal welcome preceded a more formal introduction to King Charles and Queen Camilla. The King and Queen, who arrived in a state Bentley, were dressed elegantly, with Queen Camilla recovering from acute sinusitis to attend the crucial events.
The ceremonial welcome at Windsor Castle was designed for dramatic splendor, tailored to the President's known appreciation for pomp and circumstance. It included a Royal Salute fired simultaneously from the East Lawn of Windsor Castle and the Tower of London. A carriage procession, escorted by the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment, moved through the Windsor Estate, lined by members of the armed forces and accompanied by three military bands from the Royal Marines, Army, and RAF. The procession concluded at the castle’s George IV Gate, where the US and British national anthems were played. Lieutenant Colonel Storm Green of the Coldstream Guards commanded the guard of honor, which President Trump was invited to inspect.
A major highlight of the visit was an historic military flypast featuring a joint squadron of British and American F-35 stealth jets alongside the RAF's famed Red Arrows. This display, touted as unprecedented, symbolized the robust UK-US defense and security relationship, involving 1,300 members of the British military and 120 horses. The Red Arrows were expected to fly over Windsor Castle around 4:45 PM.
The Trumps' itinerary also included a formal lunch, a visit to St. George’s Chapel to lay a wreath on the tomb of the late Queen Elizabeth II—who had hosted Trump's first state visit in 2019—and a lavish state banquet in the castle’s Great Hall. Both King Charles and President Trump delivered speeches at the banquet, which featured performances by the Duchess of Edinburgh's String Orchestra and pipers from The Scots Guards. Mr. Trump had previously expressed his admiration for King Charles, describing him as a 'gracious and elegant man', and had met Prince William, whom he called 'good-looking,' on several occasions.
Security measures for the state visit were extensive, comprising one of the largest policing operations since the King’s coronation in 2023. A ring of steel was installed around Windsor, with armed police patrols and a major drone operation involving 55 drones and 74 pilots, creating a 1.5-mile exclusion zone around the castle. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio also arrived, with security levels peaking. The President's 'Beast' limousine was also part of the security convoy, although he primarily traveled by helicopter.
Despite the grand welcome, the visit was not without controversy and public dissent. Protesters gathered in Windsor and planned larger demonstrations in central London, organized by groups like the Stop Trump Coalition. Issues such as Mr. Trump's past association with financier Jeffrey Epstein were highlighted, with images of Trump, Epstein, and Prince Andrew projected onto Windsor Castle walls, leading to four arrests for malicious communication. London Mayor Sadiq Khan reignited his feud with Trump, criticizing his policies and noting a record number of Americans moving to the UK to escape him. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Keir Starmer faced scrutiny over a stalled trade deal with the US, particularly regarding steel tariffs. Some observers, including artist Kaya Mar, viewed the state visit as a 'bribe' for a favorable trade deal, questioning the appropriateness of such elaborate pageantry.
Throughout the visit, Mr. Trump reiterated his fondness for the UK, calling it a 'very special place' and expressing excitement for his interactions with the Royal Family. His trip was also expected to involve discussions with Prime Minister Keir Starmer at Chequers on Thursday, with commitments potentially worth 'tens of billions' of dollars in finance and technology, alongside talks on post-Brexit trade, defense, and nuclear technology. Nigel Farage, while not attending the banquet, confirmed discussions with US officials about major investments in Britain, including by Microsoft.
