Travel Advisory: Tanzania Debunks Election Nullification Claims on Social Media
Following the contentious October 2025 general election in Tanzania, social media has been rife with claims that the presidential results have been declared null and void. However, these allegations, including a widely circulated Facebook post claiming, "BREAKING NEWS: Tanzania Presidential results have been nullified and ordered to conduct fresh election once the opposition leader Tundu Lissu is released but mama Samuia Hassan has refused," are categorically false.
Tanzania held its general elections on October 29, 2025. A significant point of contention throughout the electoral process was the barring of Tundu Lissu, a prominent opposition party leader, from the presidential race. Lissu had been arrested and subsequently charged with treason in April after publicly advocating for electoral reforms. The election itself was marred by reports of vandalism and widespread violence, tragically resulting in the loss of hundreds of lives. Despite these turbulent circumstances, President Samia Suluhu Hassan was officially declared the winner and was sworn in for her second term on November 3.
Tanzania's Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) officially announced Hassan as the winner of the presidential election on November 1. Since this declaration, there has been no mention of any nullified results on the INEC website's news section. Furthermore, independent verification, including by Africa Check, has found no credible reports from local or international media organizations indicating that Tanzania's presidential results had been declared invalid or that a new election would be held. Such a significant development, if legitimate, would undoubtedly have been widely reported by reputable news outlets globally.
In response to the election's outcome and the reported irregularities, the European Parliament issued a strong condemnation regarding the use of violence, as well as the barring and arrest of Tundu Lissu from the electoral process. The European Parliament also voted to block planned aid to Tanzania, citing the violence as the primary reason, and called for an African-led commission to investigate the reported killings, enforced disappearances, torture, and other human rights violations that occurred during the election. Despite these condemnations and calls for investigation, it is important to note that no calls for a re-election have been made.
During periods of heightened information flow, such as elections, it is crucial for the public to exercise caution and seek news updates from trusted sources to prevent the spread of misinformation. Claims that the presidential election result in Tanzania has been nullified and that another election is contingent upon the release of Tundu Lissu are unfounded and should therefore be ignored.
