Tragic Misdiagnosis: Young Father Dies After Doctors Miss Heart Attack Signs

Michael Reynolds, a 29-year-old father, tragically died just 24 hours after a general practitioner (GP) mistakenly diagnosed him with tonsillitis and declined to send him to A&E, despite his throat 'closing up'. Mr. Reynolds initially visited his GP on November 29, 2023, with complaints of a sore and swollen throat and a cough that had persisted for two to three months. He was advised to rest, given a steroid nasal spray, and referred for a chest x-ray.
However, Mr. Reynolds' symptoms deteriorated significantly, making it impossible for him to swallow. The following day, he attended an urgent in-person appointment with a different doctor. He reported an inability to eat or swallow, a sensation of his throat closing, a high fever, and was spitting saliva into a bowl. Despite his explicit concerns about needing to go to A&E, the doctor dismissed them, reiterating a tonsillitis diagnosis and prescribing oral antibiotics.

Upon returning to hisBoston,Lincolnshire home with his wife, Charlotte, after collecting his prescription, Mr. Reynolds collapsed and suffered a seizure. An ambulance was called, and he was rushed to the hospital, but he passed away the next morning, on December 1. A post-mortem examination determined that his death was caused by a cardiac arrest, triggered by a lack of oxygen due to his throat closing. The underlying condition was identified as epiglottitis, the swelling of the flap that covers the windpipe during swallowing, leading to an upper airway obstruction.
An inquest into his death in December 2023 atLincolnshire Coroner's Courtconcluded that there had been a 'missed opportunity' to provide urgent treatment by sending him to A&E. The coroner noted that A&E staff would likely be more familiar with the symptoms of epiglottitis and that earlier transfer to resuscitation could have occurred. Mr. Reynolds is survived by his young son, Jacob.

His devastated family has since instructed medical negligence solicitorsIrwin Mitchell to investigate the care he received. Charlotte Reynolds, his widow, expressed her profound grief, stating the immense hole Michael's loss has left in their lives. She hopes that by sharing their story, it will raise awareness of epiglottitis and emphasize the critical need for emergency treatment, potentially leading to improvements in patient care for others.
Rosie Charlton, the family's lawyer, echoed these sentiments, highlighting the tragic nature of the case and the validation of the family's concerns by the inquest findings. She stressed the importance of learning from this incident to enhance patient safety and prevent similar suffering in the future.
