Tragic End: Ugandan Dancehall Star Master Parrot Dies in Road Crash, Police Seek Hit-and-Run Driver
Ugandan dancehall artiste David Sifaayo, widely known by his stage name Master Parrot, tragically died on the night of June 1, 2026, following a fatal road accident in Kampala. News of his untimely passing was initially announced by former National Unity Platform presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine, through a post on his X account. Bobi Wine expressed his grief, remembering Master Parrot for their old conversations and hearty laughter, writing, "Just got the terrible news that we've lost our brother, Master Parrot. Old funny conversations, careless hearty laughters, are the painful memories you leave with us, my friend. Until we meet again."
The accident occurred around 7:30 PM near Masanafu along the Northern Bypass. Initial witness accounts suggested Master Parrot was knocked by a speeding motorcycle while attempting to cross the road. However, Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy Spokesperson, ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, later clarified that preliminary findings indicate Master Parrot was struck by a speeding vehicle whose driver fled the scene without stopping to offer assistance. Police confirmed the victim died instantly from injuries sustained in the crash. His body was subsequently taken to City Mortuary for a postmortem examination, with personal belongings recovered from the scene remaining in police custody.
Police have launched a thorough investigation into the fatal hit-and-run incident. ASP Owoyesigyire stated that efforts are underway to identify the vehicle responsible for this fatal accident, with investigators reviewing CCTV footage from the area to establish its identity and registration details. He urged motorists and pedestrians to observe road safety regulations, particularly along busy highways such as the Northern Bypass, and appealed to the driver involved to report to the nearest police station. Police confirmed that investigations into the fatal crash are ongoing.
Master Parrot was a prominent figure in Uganda's music industry, having risen to fame in the early 2000s. He was celebrated for a string of popular songs, including "Muliro," "Maama Wa Baana," and "Kikompola," which earned him a loyal following among dancehall and ragga fans across Uganda. NBS After 5 presenter Douglas Lwanga described Master Parrot as one of the defining figures of Uganda's dancehall scene during the first decade of the the 2000s, noting his hit song "Muliro." He was also a founding member of Bobi Wine's influential Firebase Crew, significantly contributing to the popularization of dancehall and ragga music in the country.
Following the confirmation of his death, tributes poured in from fellow musicians, media personalities, and fans, celebrating his contribution to Uganda's music industry. Some suggested that his body be taken to the National Theatre to allow fans and colleagues to pay their respects before burial. Reports indicated that in recent years, the musician had been navigating struggles with alcohol addiction and mental health challenges. As investigations continue, funeral arrangements for Master Parrot had not yet been announced at press time.
