Tragedy Strikes Nollywood: Veteran Actor Ogogo Hassan Dies, Stars Mourn Loss
Veteran Nollywood actor Taiwo Hassan, known as Ogogo, has died at 66 after battling stage-four cancer. His daughter, Kira Taiwo, announced his death amidst emotional appeals for medical assistance from the family. The news has led to an outpouring of grief and tributes from colleagues across the Nigerian film industry, highlighting his significant legacy.
Veteran Nollywood actor and screenwriter, Taiwo Hassan, widely known as Ogogo, has passed away at the age of 66 after a courageous battle with stage-four cancer. His death was officially announced by his daughter, Kira Taiwo, during a visibly emotional Instagram Live session on Sunday, where she was seen crying and desperately calling for her sister and other family members. Expressing profound disbelief, Kira repeatedly stated, "Help me to call my sister, help me to call my family. My father is dead, I don’t believe them. I don’t believe. I want to go home." She also conveyed her wish to see her father before his burial, highlighting the depth of her grief.
Ogogo's passing came just days after his family publicly disclosed his advanced cancer diagnosis and made heartfelt appeals for medical assistance. His daughters, Kira and Lima (also identified as Haleemah), had previously made separate emotional pleas, seeking medical professionals and facilities that could continue his treatment. The family explicitly stated that they were not soliciting financial donations but rather urgently needed help in finding appropriate medical care, particularly after being informed that chemotherapy could no longer be administered due to his deteriorating condition. Earlier reports claiming his death on August 18 were debunked by his daughter Lima, who described them as false.
The plight of the veteran actor prompted an outpouring of support from the Yoruba film industry. Ogun West Senator Solomon Adeola facilitated medical assistance, reaching out to cancer specialists on Ogogo's behalf, which led to his admission to an operating theatre. A collective prayer session was held on Friday, August 21, at BOS Hall, LTV 8, Agidingbi, Ikeja, Lagos. Numerous prominent actors attended, including Jide Kosoko, Yinka Quadri, Antar Laniyan, Bukky Wright, Yomi Fash Lanso, Fausat Balogun (popularly known as Madam Saje), Mr Latin, Rotimi Salami, and Adewale Elesho, all gathering to pray for their ailing colleague.
Following his death, Nollywood stars took to social media to mourn the beloved actor. Saidi Balogun shared a picture of Ogogo on Instagram, writing, "Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'[un. You can rest now my brother Taiwo Hassan Ogogo. May Almighty Allah guide you through Aljannah. This is truly painful." Wunmi Toriola expressed her sorrow, stating, "Erin WoHaSir TOdigbere Rest on LegendOju ti owo." Ayo Adesanya also paid tribute, saying, "God loves you the most ..you will always be the one and only ogogo in our hearts RIP sir T That beautiful smile of yours will be missed dearly." Other colleagues who mourned the actor include Sotayo Gaga, Kemity, Bimpe Akintunde, Adeniyi Johnson, Biola Adebayo, and Regina Chukwu.
Taiwo Hassan, born on October 31, 1959, in Ilaro, Ogun State, began his illustrious acting career in the 1980s (specifically 1981). He swiftly rose to become one of the most recognized and respected figures in Yoruba language cinema. Throughout his extensive career, he excelled as an actor, filmmaker, producer, and director, appearing in hundreds of films. His notable works include appearances in films such as Omo Ghetto, Aníkúlápó, and Aníkúlápó: Rise of the Spectre, leaving behind a profound legacy in the Nigerian film industry.
