A significant security incident at Manchester Airport overnight on Friday, August 21, led to the detention of a 17-year-old male under the Mental Health Act. Greater Manchester Police confirmed that officers were called just after 11.20pm following reports that an individual had allegedly accessed the airfield, causing widespread disruption to flight operations.
The incident, which lasted for approximately 15 minutes, resulted in seven flights being diverted to other airports and at least 17 flights being held in the air or on the ground, causing further delays. The individual involved was subsequently taken to hospital from the scene. Airport operations returned to normal by Saturday morning, and a temporary fix was implemented to address the security breach.
Among the flights affected were a TUI flight from Boa Vista, Cape Verde, which was diverted to East Midlands Airport; a Ryanair flight from Agadir, Morocco, rerouted to Birmingham; and an easyJet flight from Barcelona that landed in Liverpool. These diversions meant passengers faced considerable delays in reaching their intended destination.
Passengers caught in the disruption shared their experiences. Rai Hirst from Bolton, who arrived shortly after the incident, praised airport staff for their handling of the situation. Hirst commented on the seamless airport response, noting the staff's professionalism and empathy, stating that the inconvenience was worth knowing someone was safe and hoping the individual receives the necessary help.
Angela Slater, a passenger on the diverted TUI flight from Cape Verde, described a two-hour delay in landing and arriving home at 3.30am. She commended the flight crew and captain for keeping passengers informed during a 'crazy situation' and navigating the need to refuel after multiple holding laps due to an unguaranteed landing time at Manchester.
Greater Manchester Police continue their enquiries into the incident, which saw the 17-year-old detained under the Mental Health Act, underscoring the personal circumstances behind the operational disruption at one of the UK's busiest airports.
