Tragedy Strikes Music Royalty: Earth, Wind & Fire's John Paris in Coma
Earth, Wind & Fire drummer John Paris is in a medically induced coma following a critical medical emergency earlier this month, leading to a concert postponement. His family shared updates on his condition and a brief moment of consciousness, while a GoFundMe campaign gathers support. The band has resumed touring with a fill-in drummer, highlighting Paris's significant contributions and Earth, Wind & Fire's legendary status.
John Paris, the esteemed 58-year-old drummer for the legendary band Earth, Wind & Fire, has been placed in a medically induced coma following a critical medical emergency that occurred earlier this month. Paris was hospitalized on August 6, just hours before the group was scheduled to perform with Lionel Richie at the Chase Center in San Francisco. The concert was subsequently postponed minutes before showtime, with the band citing a medical emergency involving a band member. While Paris's family has not publicly confirmed the exact nature of his condition, the San Francisco Fire Department reported responding to a cardiac incident at the venue, transporting one person to the hospital in critical condition.
An update shared on August 13 by Shelly Clark White, the wife of Earth, Wind & Fire bassist Verdine White, revealed that doctors induced the coma upon Paris's arrival at the hospital to facilitate critical care. Throughout this challenging time, Paris's wife, musician Kathy Merrick, and their daughter Kyla have remained steadfastly by his side. The family shared a moment of brief hope when Paris regained consciousness, opening his eyes and asking for his wife. After seeing her, he humorously quipped to a close friend, "Get me outta here," a moment that brought "tears, laughter, hugs and renewed hope" to his loved ones.
However, this period of lucidity was short-lived. Paris soon experienced a rise in blood pressure and difficulty breathing, necessitating further sedation by doctors to stabilize his body. The family's statement concluded with a message of enduring optimism: "John’s journey is far from over. There is so much hope that surrounds him." In a show of widespread support, a GoFundMe campaign established to aid Paris and his family has quickly garnered nearly $70,000, nearing its $75,000 goal, with several of his bandmates contributing to the fund.
Despite the ongoing situation, Earth, Wind & Fire resumed their tour two days after the postponed San Francisco show, with former member Sonny Emory stepping in to perform on drums. The rescheduled concert date in San Francisco is set for September 26. John Paris joined Earth, Wind & Fire in 2001, contributing to studio albums such as 2003’s The Promise and 2005’s Illumination. His extensive musical career also includes collaborations with notable artists like Patti LaBelle and Sheila E.
Earth, Wind & Fire, founded in Chicago in 1969 by the late Maurice White, has cemented its legacy as one of the most successful and influential groups in American music. The band has sold over 90 million records globally, recognized for its distinctive fusion of R&B, funk, soul, jazz, and pop. Their illustrious career includes their sole Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 hit, 1975’s “Shining Star,” which also topped the Hot Soul Songs chart and earned a Grammy Award. Enduring hits such as “September,” “Boogie Wonderland,” and “Let’s Groove” — their highest-charting Hot 100 hit at No. 3 — became iconic anthems of their era. The group achieved two Billboard 200 No. 1 albums in 1975 with That’s the Way of the World and Gratitude, garnered six Grammy Awards, and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2000. Currently, the band is the focus of a Questlove-directed documentary that premiered in June.
