Tornos News | Eleni Skarveli: Greece Best European Destination at The Telegraph Travel Awards 2025
The head of the Greek National Tourism Organization (GNTO) UK & Ireland, Eleni Skarveli, with the Greece award, and the editor-in-chief of the travel section of The Telegraph newspaper, Ben Ross.
Greece has won another top distinction in the particularly important and demanding British market.
Our country has been named the Best European Destination (Best European Country) at The Telegraph Travel Awards 2025.
These awards have been organized since 1998 with the aim of rewarding the top travel products and services and are considered particularly influential for the tourist choices of British travelers. The readers of The Telegraph newspaper (subscribers and registered users of the electronic edition) participate in these, who vote in twenty different categories for their favorite destinations, airlines, hotels, holiday rental companies and other travel experiences, based on their travels in the previous year.
In this year's awards, 20,000 readers of the newspaper brought Greece to first place, dethroning Italy, which occupied second place after 25 consecutive years, while the top three were completed by Norway.
The announcement of the awards took place at a special event in central London, last Friday, July 11, 2025, with the Greek award being received by the head of the Greek National Tourism Organisation (GNTO) Service for the United Kingdom & Ireland, Eleni Skarveli.
Commenting on its readers’ choice, the online edition of the newspaper notes that Greece’s victory is “entirely deserved, because there are few things the country does not excel at. Its islands, scattered across the waters of the Ionian and Aegean Seas, are exquisite. As is the “visible” history, dug into the hillsides from the Parthenon on the Acropolis of Athens to the ruins of Knossos in Crete.”
The Telegraph is one of the leading media outlets in the United Kingdom, with significant influence on its affluent and travel-savvy audience. According to the latest figures, it has over 600,000 digital subscribers, while the travel section of its website attracts more than 12 million unique visitors annually.
