Tinubu 2027: Allies Launch Abuja Re-election Drive, Target FCT Votes
Two prominent political groups, the Hope Alive Initiative and the Rainbow Coalition Family Movement, have initiated early mobilization campaigns in Abuja for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's 2027 re-election bid. Both groups emphasize grassroots engagement and a focus on the administration's policies and achievements, with the Rainbow Coalition setting an ambitious target of over 90 percent of FCT votes.
Political momentum is building in Abuja, Nigeria's capital, as two distinct pro-good governance groups have initiated early campaigns to garner support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's re-election bid in the 2027 general election. These efforts underscore a strategic push to engage citizens at various levels, focusing on the administration's performance and future mandate.
The Hope Alive Initiative commenced its campaign with a vibrant street mobilization in Abuja on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, featuring giant mascots. This event aligned with the Independent National Electoral Commission's (INEC) timetable for the official commencement of campaigns for the Presidential and National Assembly elections. According to Ernest Omoarelojie, the Director of Press and Communications for the Hope Alive Initiative, the group aims to transcend conventional political gatherings by directly engaging Nigerians on the policies and programs of the Tinubu administration. Omoarelojie stated that their support stems from a belief that the administration has taken significant steps to reposition the country. The campaign encourages Nigerians to assess the government based on concrete achievements, such as the students loan scheme, economic reforms, foreign exchange management, and infrastructure development, rather than political sentiments. He urged citizens to look beyond sentiment and focus on facts, emphasizing that reforms require time to yield their full impact, and the 2027 election offers an opportunity to evaluate the country's direction.
Concurrently, the Rainbow Coalition Family Movement has set an ambitious target to secure over 90 percent of votes for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) during the 2027 presidential election. This objective marks a substantial increase from the 19.76 percent (90,902 votes) Tinubu polled in the FCT during the 2023 presidential election, where the Labour Party candidate, Peter Obi, secured 281,717 votes. Yakubu Gowon Adama, the FCT coordinator for the movement, announced plans for extensive grassroots mobilization across the capital. This strategy involves engaging a broad spectrum of leaders, including political, traditional, religious, professional, and community figures, well ahead of the election. The coalition is open to members from various political parties and aims to mobilize support not only for Tinubu's re-election but also for All Progressives Congress (APC) candidates vying for National Assembly seats in the FCT.
Adama further explained that the Rainbow Coalition was partly inspired by the inclusive political approach demonstrated by the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, and has incorporated the structure of the Patriots of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu (POBAT) into its framework. Beyond the FCT, the movement boasts a robust presence across the Northern region. Prince Umar Haruna, the Northern Regional Coordinator, confirmed that structures in all 19 northern states are prepared for grassroots mobilization, advocating for peaceful and responsible political activities while encouraging greater participation in the democratic process. Additionally, Hajia Mutiat Bidemi Babatunde, the Northern Regional Women Leader, called for enhanced participation of women in political mobilization and decision-making, pledging to mobilize women across northern states for active engagement. Both groups' mobilization activities are set to continue ahead of the 2027 election, with a unified goal of building sustained support for President Tinubu and APC candidates.
