Electoral Alarm: ADC Warns Against 2027 Manipulation and Intimidation

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has voiced significant concerns regarding the integrity of Nigeria's electoral process, specifically highlighting the abuse perpetrated by governments in power and, increasingly, by non-state actors as the nation approaches the 2027 general elections. Senator David Mark, the National Chairman of the ADC, articulated these apprehensions on Wednesday in Abuja during a meeting with a delegation from the International Republican Institute (IRI), led by its African Regional Director, Jenai Cox.

Senator Mark emphasized that the credibility of the 2027 elections is paramount and non-negotiable. He stressed the urgent need for a transparent, inclusive, and peaceful electoral process, one that is entirely free from manipulation, intimidation, and the misuse of state institutions. Mark unequivocally condemned the rampant violence and intimidation that marred the recently concluded Osun State governorship election, an event he noted reportedly resulted in the tragic loss of no fewer than 30 lives. He asserted that elections are not to be viewed as a declaration of war or a 'do-or-die' affair, but rather as a fundamental democratic mechanism through which citizens freely elect their leaders and advance their collective aspirations for national development and an improved quality of life.

The ADC chairman reiterated his party's commitment to participating in elections conducted within a secure environment, one that explicitly guarantees free, fair, transparent, and credible polls where every legitimate vote is counted and every mandate is respected. He warmly welcomed IRI's Pre-Election Assessment Mission to Nigeria, recognizing its engagement with political parties, civil society organizations, and other key stakeholders as a crucial step in preparing for the 2027 elections. Mark expressed the ADC's readiness to openly share its experiences and concerns with the delegation, believing that an independent and credible assessment by reputable organizations like IRI could be instrumental in identifying potential challenges and bolstering confidence in Nigeria's overarching electoral framework. Furthermore, he called for sustained efforts to ensure that legitimate electoral outcomes are honored and that all citizens are empowered to exercise their franchise without fear or intimidation.

Earlier in the meeting, Jenai Cox outlined the purpose of the IRI delegation's visit to Nigeria: to conduct an assessment of the preparations for the 2027 general elections and to engage with vital stakeholders regarding the current state of the electoral process, including its inherent challenges and future prospects. She disclosed that certain members of the delegation had recently been present as observers during the Osun governorship election, while another team had fulfilled a similar role in Ekiti for its off-cycle election. Cox highlighted IRI's longstanding commitment to observing elections in Nigeria since the country's return to democratic rule in 1999, often collaborating with the National Democratic Institute in these endeavors. She confirmed that the pre-election assessment mission would conclude by the end of the week, following which the institute intends to issue recommendations based on its observations from the off-cycle elections and its extensive engagements with stakeholders in Abuja. Cox concluded by extending her gratitude to the ADC leadership for their hospitality and for providing a valuable opportunity to exchange views on the preparations for the upcoming 2027 elections.
