The Unexpected Edge: Data Suggests Missing Champions League Boosts Premier League Teams
Arsene Wenger's seemingly humble declaration in 2012, that 'the first trophy is to finish in the top four,' was met with derision by many, but it underscored a profound economic reality for Arsenal. Following significant stadium construction costs, Arsenal's ability to compete financially with powerhouses like Manchester United, Manchester City, and Chelsea was severely hampered. Securing a top-four finish in the Premier League, and thus qualifying for the UEFA Champions League, was crucial for generating the millions in revenue needed to stay competitive and aspire to major titles like the Premier League or Champions League itself. While not a traditional trophy, the intense 'top-four race' has become a fundamental narrative of each season, alongside the title race and relegation battle, reflecting its immense significance.
The current season, even with an added fifth Champions League spot for the Premier League, highlights this ongoing importance. Teams like Manchester United, Aston Villa, Liverpool, and Chelsea are predominantly judged by their ability to secure one of these coveted positions. As Liverpool manager Arne Slot succinctly put it, missing Champions League football 'does have an enormous impact on the way this club is run,' primarily due to the massive hit on revenue.
Examining Liverpool's situation after their fifth-place finish in the 2022-23 season, which marked the only time under Jurgen Klopp they failed to qualify for the Champions League, reveals the financial implications. Data from Kieron O'Connor's Swiss Ramble illustrates a sharp decline in European broadcast revenue. For instance, Liverpool's European broadcast revenue dropped from €120 million in 2021-22 (a Champions League season) to €84 million in 2022-23 (still Champions League) and a mere €27 million in 2023-24 (Europa League season). This reduction in revenue directly impacts a club's capacity for transfer spending. Interestingly, Slot suggested that the full financial impact might only become evident a year later. Despite missing out on the Champions League in 2022-23, Liverpool spent €172 million on new acquisitions ahead of the subsequent season. However, their spending significantly decreased in 2024, which could be attributed to the delayed effect of reduced Champions League revenue, though other factors like player contract negotiations also played a role.
While missing Champions League revenue is impactful, the increasing commercial and broadcasting revenues of the Premier League as a whole have somewhat cushioned the blow for its biggest clubs. In 2022-23, without Champions League football, Liverpool and Chelsea still ranked seventh and ninth globally in revenue, a testament to the Premier League's immense financial power.
Beyond the financial aspect, a compelling theory has emerged: could missing out on the Champions League actually be beneficial for a team's Premier League performance? This idea gained traction in 2016-17 when Liverpool returned to the top four and Chelsea won the league after both had seasons without European competition. An analysis by astrophysicist and current Liverpool chief scientist Laurie Shaw in 2016 suggested that for 'each extra game a team plays in Europe, they can expect to lose half a point relative to the previous season,' implying a cumulative effect of resource devotion (energy, strategy, travel) to European matches, rather than an immediate 'hangover effect' in the subsequent league game.
A more recent re-analysis, focusing solely on Champions League matches, largely corroborates Shaw's findings. The data indicates that for every extra Champions League game a team plays, they lose approximately a third of a point on average in the Premier League. Removing last season's increased game count makes this closer to a point lost for every two extra Champions League games. While confounding factors like regression to the mean exist, this trend suggests a genuine negative effect on domestic performance due to the added toll of high-level Champions League matches. Interestingly, this correlation doesn't appear when looking at the total number of games played across all competitions, implying something specific about the intensity and demands of the Champions League itself.
Undeniably, the ultimate goal for any elite club is to win major titles like the Champions League and Premier League, which necessitates participation in the Champions League. However, given the Premier League's current financial strength and grueling competitive landscape, there might be a unique 'one-year exponential boost' for a club that temporarily drops out of the Champions League. Such a club would still benefit from the previous season's European revenues for squad investment, potentially experience improved luck, and crucially, gain a full season free from the demanding schedule and potentially deleterious effects of midweek Champions League matches. This scenario suggests that teams missing out on the top five this season, such as Liverpool or Chelsea, could be strong contenders to bounce back into Champions League qualification spots the following year, offering a silver lining for their fans.
