The End of an Era? Lamborghini Sticking to Automatics!
Despite a growing trend among supercar manufacturers to reintroduce manual transmissions for an enhanced driving experience, Lamborghini has confirmed it has no immediate plans to follow suit. The Italian automaker's chief marketing officer stated that while a manual option could be interesting, their current focus is on maximizing the potential of their existing automatic gearbox technology and new models.
In an era where the performance metrics of supercars and hypercars increasingly converge, automakers are shifting their focus from raw numbers to enhancing the overall driving experience. This trend has seen several prominent manufacturers, including McLaren, Gordon Murray Special Vehicles, Spyker, Ferrari, Koenigsegg, Pagani, and Aston Martin, reintroducing manual transmissions as a way to differentiate their ultra-exclusive vehicles. These companies are actively catering to wealthy car enthusiasts who seek a more engaging and traditional connection with their high-performance machines.
Despite this industry movement, Lamborghini has explicitly stated it has no current plans to bring back the manual transmission. Federico Foschini, Lamborghini's chief marketing officer, confirmed to MotorTrend that a manual gearbox is "not under evaluation in the short term." While acknowledging that a manual option could be "interesting" and might find a space as a "niche product," Foschini emphasized that Lamborghini's primary focus remains on exploiting the full potential of its current technological advancements, particularly with its automatic gear-shifting and gearbox strategies.
Foschini elaborated that to truly explore the capabilities of their latest technologies and models, such as the Revuelto SV, the current automatic gearbox strategy is essential. He explained that this approach allows Lamborghini to fully leverage the car's potential and deliver the kind of engagement expected from their vehicles. While recognizing the manual transmission as an "opportunity," the company's current priorities lie in interpreting and developing its existing technology. Therefore, for the foreseeable future, Lamborghini will continue to prioritize its advanced automatic systems over a return to the stick shift.
