Super Falcons Make History: Nigeria Clinches 10th WAFCON Title in Thrilling Fashion

The Super Falcons of Nigeria have achieved a monumental feat, securing their record-extending 10th Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title. In a thrilling and dramatic final against host nation Morocco, the Nigerian team staged an incredible 3-2 comeback victory at the Stade Olympique in Rabat, completing what they termed 'Mission X'. This historic triumph has sparked widespread celebration across Nigeria, with prominent figures commending the team's resilience and spirit.

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu was among the first to extend his congratulations. In a heartfelt social media post, Governor Sanwo-Olu lauded the Super Falcons, stating, "This win is a reminder of what can happen when talent, discipline, and belief come together." He thanked the players, coaches, and support staff for making the country proud, emphasizing that they had shown the world "the strength and spirit of Nigerian football." He concluded by celebrating their "flawless 10 out of 10 performance."

First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu also joined the nation in celebrating the Super Falcons' success. In her congratulatory message, Senator Tinubu praised the team's resilience in overcoming a formidable Moroccan side. She highlighted their role as "ambassadors of Nigerian excellence," inspiring millions globally. "Your resounding 3-2 victory is indeed remarkable and commendable. It is not just another trophy; it is a testament to your hard work, consistency, and the indomitable Nigerian spirit," she stated, adding, "You have once again lifted the pride of our dear nation, Nigeria and cemented your place as Queens of African football."

The final match itself was a testament to the Super Falcons' fighting spirit. Morocco took an early lead with goals from Ghiziane Chebbak in the 13th minute and Sanaa Mssoudy in the 24th minute, heading into halftime with a two-goal advantage. However, tactical changes by head coach Justin Madugu, including the introduction of Rinsola Babajide and Jennifer Echegini, revitalized the team. Esther Okoronkwo initiated the comeback, converting a penalty in the 64th minute. She then provided an assist for Folashade Ijamilusi to score the equalizer in the 71st minute. Okoronkwo continued her stellar performance, finding Jennifer Echegini in the 88th minute for the decisive winning goal, sealing the 3-2 victory.

Beyond the on-field action, the final was marked by a controversial tactic from Moroccan fans who shone laser lights onto Nigerian players, particularly targeting Esther Okoronkwo. Super Falcons defender Michelle Alozie, however, turned this into a moment of playful defiance. In a post-match Snapchat video with Okoronkwo, Alozie cheekily captioned, "Their lasers didn't work," perfectly encapsulating the team's unshakable composure and winning spirit despite the hostile atmosphere. Alozie's confident message resonated across social media, symbolizing the team's mental fortitude.

Even legendary striker Asisat Oshoala, who was part of the victorious squad, credited her teammates Oluwatosin Demehin and Deborah Abiodun for their crucial roles in her WAFCON journey. She shared her gratitude on Instagram, posting, "Can’t tell my Mission X story without these two," acknowledging their profound influence. The Super Falcons' historic victory not only extends their dominance in African football but also serves as a powerful reminder of talent, discipline, and the unyielding Nigerian spirit.
