Super Eagles Soar! Nigeria Thrash Gabon 4-1, Secure Spot in WCQ Final

Nigeria's Super Eagles have advanced in their quest for a spot in the 2026 World Cup, defeating Gabon's Panthers 4-1 in a crucial playoff semi-final on Thursday evening. The Super Eagles had secured their place in this mini-tournament by finishing as one of Africa’s best runners-up in the main qualifying series. The ultimate prize for the winners of Africa’s playoffs is progression to a six-team intercontinental qualifier, scheduled from March 23 to 31, 2026, which will determine the final two teams for next year’s World Cup.
The one-off semi-final clash took place in Rabat. Nigeria lined up with a strong squad featuring Nwabali in goal, Chiemela, Zaidu, Ndidi, Lookman, Osimhen, Chukwueze, Osayi, Iwobi, Adams, and Bassey. Gabon's starting XI included Mbaba, Openga Owaga, Oyono, Ecuele Manga, Ondele, Ekomie, Ndong, Biyogo Poko, Lemina, Bouanga, and Aubameyang. Gabon, under coach Eric Chelle, had finished behind South Africa in Group C of the qualifiers.
The first half of the match concluded goalless, despite Nigeria's clear dominance and several missed opportunities to take the lead. The second half brought more drama, including a VAR check after Bright Osayi-Samuel was observed tugging at a Gabon player's shirt. However, after reviewing the monitor, the referee opted not to award a penalty, allowing play to continue.
The deadlock was finally broken in the 78th minute when Akor Adams seized a loose ball and scored into an empty net, putting Nigeria ahead. Yet, Gabon responded swiftly, with Mario Lemina leveling the score just 10 minutes later with a deflected effort that crept past Stanley Nwabali, making it 1-1 at full time and forcing the game into extra time.
In extra time, the Super Eagles found their stride. Chidera Ejuke finished off a fine move, capitalizing on Wilfred Ndidi’s pass to restore Nigeria’s lead. Soon after, Victor Osimhen, despite an earlier late miss, drilled in a goal to extend Nigeria's advantage to 3-1. He then added another goal, completing his brace and securing a commanding 4-1 victory for the Super Eagles.
With this impressive win, Nigeria will now face the winner of the match between DR Congo and Cameroon for the highly coveted African ticket to the intercontinental playoffs, continuing their challenging but promising journey towards the 2026 World Cup.
