Super Eagles Ignite AFCON with Stunning Victory Over Tunisia!

Nigeria's Super Eagles secured a thrilling 3-2 victory over the Carthage Eagles of Tunisia in a pivotal Group C fixture at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, clinching their spot in the knockout stage. The highly anticipated encounter, held at the Complexe Sportif de Fès, was not just a battle for group supremacy but also carried the weight of a past defeat, as Tunisia had eliminated Nigeria 1-0 in the Round of 16 at the 2021 edition.
Ahead of the match, confidence was high within the Nigerian camp. Defender Calvin Bassey expressed belief in the team's quality, acknowledging Tunisia as a strong opponent but asserting Nigeria's capability to win. Midfielder Fisayo Dele-Bashiru echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the motivation of the AFCON tournament itself and the objective of finishing top of Group C. Tunisia, coming off a dominant 3-1 win over Uganda, presented a formidable challenge.
The match was officiated by Mali’s Boubou Traore, a 34-year-old experienced arbiter, with Senegal’s Issa Sy appointed as the Video Assistant Referee (VAR). Under coach Eric Chelle, Nigeria showcased an evolved tactical approach dubbed 'Chelle-ball'. Moving away from their traditional counter-attacking style, the Super Eagles adopted a high-possession game, dictating the tempo and aiming to impose their identity on a technically gifted Tunisian side from the outset.
The first half saw Nigeria dominate possession and create chances, though Victor Osimhen initially struggled to convert. The Galatasaray star missed several clear headers, leading to vocal frustration from fans on social media. Despite the missed opportunities, Osimhen's persistence paid off just before the half-time whistle. He connected with a pinpoint cross from Ademola Lookman, heading home powerfully to give Nigeria a crucial 1-0 lead and silence his critics.
Nigeria emerged from the break with undiminished intensity. Their relentless pressure soon yielded a second goal when newly-installed captain Wilfred Ndidi found the back of the net in the 50th minute, scoring his first international goal for the Super Eagles and celebrating with a nod to legend Kanu Nwankwo. The Super Eagles extended their lead further just after the hour mark, with Ademola Lookman capping off a sensational individual performance. After unselfish work from Osimhen, who turned provider, Lookman smashed home Nigeria's third goal, sealing what appeared to be a comfortable victory.
However, Tunisia mounted a late comeback, refusing to surrender. Ismaël Gharbi pulled one back in the 74th minute, and tension escalated when Ali Abdi converted a penalty after a controversial VAR handball call against Bright Osayi-Samuel. Despite these late jitters, the Super Eagles held on to secure a 3-2 win, reaffirming their status as serious AFCON 2025 contenders.
Ademola Lookman was undoubtedly the star of the match, earning Man of the Match honors for his masterclass performance. He provided two crucial assists for Osimhen and Ndidi's goals and capped his night with a brilliant goal himself. Fans lauded his impact, noting his pivotal role in orchestrating Nigeria's attack and contrasting his AFCON form with previous performances. Osimhen, despite his early struggles, proved a handful for the Tunisian defense, scoring a vital goal and registering an assist for Lookman's strike. Wilfred Ndidi's leadership and ball-winning prowess in midfield were instrumental in Nigeria's dominance for much of the game.
While key players shone, some areas of concern were noted in individual player assessments. Goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali's performance was deemed shaky, particularly for Tunisia's first goal. Bright Osayi-Samuel's careless handball led to the penalty, and fullbacks Bright Osayi-Samuel and Bruno Onyeamachi offered limited width and defensive solidity. Nonetheless, the collective effort, combined with Eric Chelle's tactical evolution and the brilliance of players like Lookman, Osimhen, and Ndidi, ensured Nigeria's passage to the Round of 16, placing them at the top of Group C with six points.
