Super Eagles AFCON 2025 Camp Explodes: Uzoho Takes Center Stage in Goalkeeper Battle

The Super Eagles of Nigeria have officially opened their preparatory camp in Cairo, Egypt, ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament in Morocco. The camp commenced on Sunday, December 14, at the prestigious Renaissance Hotel in Cairo, marking the initial phase of the team's crucial preparations, including a friendly fixture against the Egyptian national team.

The choice of accommodation, the Renaissance Hotel in Cairo, signifies a clear intent for comfort and quality. This five-star establishment, nestled in the New Mirage City and conveniently located just five minutes from Cairo International Airport, offers top-tier amenities. These include a swimming pool, a fully equipped fitness center and gym, high-speed Wi-Fi, and valet parking. With rooms starting at $213 (₦320,000) per night, it is regarded as one of Cairo's finest hotels.

The hotel boasts an impressive reputation, particularly evident in its customer reviews on TripAdvisor. Out of 1,831 reviewers, a significant 1,509 rated the hotel as excellent, with another 221 rating it as good. Reviewers frequently praised the quality of the food, the comprehensive fitness center, the scenic views, and the overall comfort of the rooms. While a few complaints regarding staff and waiting times were noted, these dated back as far as 2022, suggesting the hotel maintains high standards.

This selection stands in stark contrast to a previous incident during the CAF World Cup playoffs, where the Super Eagles' accommodation in Rabat became a point of contention. Midfielder Alex Iwobi had shared a video hinting at discomfort with the hotel arrangement, leading to widespread criticism of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF). Iwobi later clarified his intentions, and subsequent videos confirmed the Rabat facility was decent. However, the current choice of the Renaissance Hotel underscores a commitment to providing comfortable and high-quality accommodation for the team.

A significant highlight of the camp's opening was the early arrival of key players, particularly goalkeepers. Francis Uzoho was the first player to report for duty, arriving shortly after 2:00 am local time on Sunday morning. His punctuality, especially on his return to the national team setup, sends a powerful message of commitment to Head Coach Eric Chelle and signals his determination to reclaim the highly contested No. 1 jersey amidst competition from Stanley Nwabali and Amas Obasogie. Uzoho's early presence has set a competitive tone for the entire camp, demonstrating his readiness to fight for his place.

Shortly after Uzoho, Stanley Nwabali, the 2023 AFCON silver medallist, arrived as the second player, alleviating recent concerns about a potential injury. His presence provides reassurance to Coach Chelle and the technical crew as preparations intensify. With both goalkeepers now in camp, the
