Speaker Bagbin donates medical supplies to fight meningitis in Upper West
The donation includes antibiotics (Ceftriaxone), spinal needles, IV fluids, and Dexamethasone, aimed at improving diagnosis and treatment.
This initiative strengthens the region’s healthcare response and demonstrates Rt. Hon. Bagbin’s commitment to public health.
Some towns in the Upper West Region are grappling with a worsening meningitis outbreak, with 129 suspected cases, 22 confirmed cases, and 29 people hospitalized with symptoms of the disease.
Three of the hospitalized patients are in critical condition. Despite the efforts of health workers, the number of cases continues to rise weekly.
Dr. Damien Punguyire, Upper West Regional Director of Health, attributes the deaths to late reporting to health facilities.
He said the Region usually experienced a surge in meningitis cases during the dry season as a result of the hot and windy weather.
Adding that February and March are usually the time the region saw a rise in the cases. However, Dr Damien stated that meningitis cases this year started early, making it seem there was an outbreak.
This highlights the need for increased awareness and prompt medical attention. In response to the crisis, Speaker of Parliament Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin on Sunday, February 16, 2025, visited the region to assess the situation and provide support.
