Police Arrest 95 Suspected Cultists in Edo
The Edo State Police Command has apprehended 95 individuals suspected of cultism during a week-long operation focused on reducing cult-related violence in Benin City and surrounding areas. This operation was initiated in response to an increase in crime and criminal activity associated with cult activities within the state.
CSP Moses Yamu, the command’s Public Relations Officer, announced in a statement that 64 of the suspects have been formally charged in court and are currently remanded in custody. Investigations are still in progress for the remaining cases. According to Yamu, intelligence-driven raids led to the seizure of two locally made pistols, a single-barrel shotgun, and 24 live cartridges.
The suspects are alleged members of the Maphites, Eiye, and Aye confraternities. They are accused of involvement in recent killings related to cult supremacy battles in Edo State. The Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, has issued a warning to youths, urging them to avoid joining secret societies and imploring parents to closely supervise their children's activities.
Agbonika emphasized the destructive nature of these groups, stating that they ruin futures and end lives, both of their members and innocent members of the public. He also reassured the residents of the command’s dedication to dismantling cult networks and ensuring public safety throughout the state.
