Lakurawa Attack in Sokoto, Police Eliminate Bandits in Benue

At least 13 hunters are feared dead following an ambush by suspected Lakurawa terrorists in Hurumi Forest, Tangaza Local Government Area of Sokoto State. The incident occurred during the hunters' annual expedition, despite prior warnings about the threat of violence in the area. The hunters, armed with Dane guns and accompanied by dogs, entered the terrorists’ enclave deep inside the forest. Three bodies have been recovered, while ten remain missing.
In a separate incident, suspected Lakurawa armed men attacked Magonho village in Tangaza. The military repelled the assault but the insurgents returned and destroyed an MTN telecommunications mast, disrupting mobile network access. A local government official revealed that the militants had planned to use the hunters to bait security forces into an ambush, but intelligence prevented the deployment of troops to the area on the day of the incident.
The Lakurawa have reportedly shifted tactics, focusing on looting livestock and targeting security personnel rather than imposing laws on villagers. They have also fortified their positions by planting landmines. A Special Adviser on Security Matters to the Chairman of Tangaza LGA, Ghazzali Aliyu Rakah, confirmed that security operatives and local vigilantes are searching for the missing hunters. He noted that the Lakurawa are increasingly using landmines and other explosives, exacerbating the security situation.
Col. Ahmed Usman (rtd), Special Adviser on Security Matters to Governor Ahmed Aliyu, stated that the state government is collaborating with security agencies to protect communities and urged the people to support government efforts. Sokoto State Police Command spokesman, DSP Ahmad Rufa’i, confirmed the recovery and burial of two bodies, with a joint operation ongoing to find the remaining missing hunters.
In Adamawa State, 10 hunters and Civilian Joint Task Force (JTF) members were killed in an attack on Kwapre village, Hong Local Government Area, by Boko Haram terrorists. The village, bordering Sambisa Forest, has been a frequent target of terrorist attacks since 2024. The Civilian JTF members and hunters had been supporting security agencies in combating insurgency.
A string of deadly attacks in Tangaza LGA includes the killing of two fishermen and one farmer in Sanyinna village in April 2025, and a raid on Baidi village in March, resulting in casualties and livestock rustling. Despite these challenges, Maj.-Gen. Ibikunle Ajose, General Officer Commanding 8 Division of the Nigerian Army, remains optimistic about the military’s gains in the fight against banditry and terrorism.
In Benue State, Nigeria Police Force operatives neutralized three notorious bandits in a gun battle in the Sankera axis. The encounter followed intelligence about a planned coordinated attack on security teams. Two locally fabricated pistols and two live cartridges were recovered at the scene. Investigations suggest the group was acting under the directive of Konyo Amakaa, a notorious gang leader.
