Soweto Showdown Intensifies: Pirates, Chiefs Prepare for Epic Derby Clash!

The highly anticipated Soweto Derby between Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs is set to ignite the FNB Stadium this Sunday at 15:00. Orlando Pirates are entering the clash with significant momentum, having secured a dominant 3-0 victory against Kaizer Chiefs earlier this year. This win extended their impressive run to five consecutive league victories over their Soweto rivals, marking their biggest triumph in the fixture since the 2001/02 season. Despite the Buccaneers currently leading the Betway Premiership, Kaizer Chiefs have also shown considerable improvement, arriving at the derby on the back of a six-match unbeaten streak.
According to former Buccaneers captain Happy Jele, the outcome of this crucial derby will largely hinge on control of the midfield. Jele emphasized, “I think the team that’s going to dominate in the middle of the park is going to win the game.” He highlighted key midfield players for both sides, including Lebogang (Maboe, implicitly for Chiefs), and for Pirates: Mkhahleni Makhaula, Thalente Mbatha, Sipho Mbule, Relebohile Mofokeng, and Tito Maswanganyi. Jele believes that success in this area demands extra effort to effectively supply the strikers.
Beyond the midfield, Jele also pointed to Orlando Pirates’ potent attack as a decisive factor. The front three, featuring Oswin Appollis, Yanela Mbutuma, and Relebohile Mofokeng, are characterized by their high speed and quality. Mbutuma, in particular, was lauded as a “scoring machine” who consistently creates chances and recently regained confidence with a goal in the previous game.
Adding a layer of intrigue to the match is the situation surrounding Relebohile Mofokeng. The 21-year-old attacker, nicknamed “President yama 2K,” could be making his final Soweto Derby appearance amid growing speculation of a move to Europe. Mofokeng has already participated in five derbies, contributing one goal and three assists, and played a pivotal role in the build-up to the second goal in the recent 3-0 victory. He also notably scored the winning goal in a league clash last May. Heading into Sunday’s game, Mofokeng is in exceptional form, having netted 10 league goals and provided seven assists this season. With 17 goal contributions, he is just two away from reaching 19 for the season, a milestone that would place him among an elite group of PSL performers. Since joining the Orlando Pirates first team in 2022, Mofokeng has scored 29 goals in 112 appearances and is currently a leading contender for the PSL Footballer of the Year award, making this derby a prime opportunity to further strengthen his case.
Orlando Pirates’ assistant coach Mandla Ncikazi underscored the team’s strategic approach, stating that they refuse to measure opponents by names or reputations. “The size and name of the team have no consequence on how you perform on the day,” Ncikazi affirmed. He stressed the importance of thorough analysis, focusing on the opponent’s threats and how to impose Pirates’ own style of play, rather than being swayed by the occasion. The team’s mentality remains consistent: to approach every game with the goal of securing three points, regardless of the opposition.
In a timely boost for Orlando Pirates, three key players—Thalente Mbatha, Andre de Jong, and Evidence Makgopa—are expected to return to contention after missing the recent clash against AmaZulu. This provides head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou with more options as the team pursues maximum points in their remaining five league matches. While their title hopes are slim, a late push remains possible if they win all their fixtures and Mamelodi Sundowns drop points. Historical context shows the derby’s balanced nature, with Kaizer Chiefs having previously enjoyed a dominant spell of five consecutive wins between the 2020/21 and 2022/23 seasons. This Sunday’s encounter promises to be another thrilling chapter in one of South African football’s most iconic rivalries.
