Shocking Courtside Drama: Mystics Star Ejected, Escorted by Police

Washington Mystics coach Sydney Johnson was ejected from Saturday's game against the host Atlanta Dream after a heated argument with officials, culminating in police escorting him off the court. The incident occurred at the 3:52 mark of the third quarter following a foul call on Washington's Alicia Florez Getino while defending Atlanta's Angel Reese driving to the basket. Johnson engaged in a protracted argument, even as his assistants attempted to calm him and guide him back to the bench. Ultimately, three police officers accompanied Johnson as he calmly departed the court.

Following the 109-77 loss, which marked Washington's worst of the season, Johnson addressed reporters, admitting, "I lost my cool. There's nothing more than that. That's it. Officials did what was appropriate, and that's all I can say." He declined to specify what precisely upset him about the play, stating, "I'd rather not get into that." Johnson emphasized his focus on the opponent's performance and his team's learning experience, noting, "Not a great moment for our team or me ... but that certainly doesn't define the togetherness, the toughness, the joy we have. My ejection is not a great thing. That's certainly not going to be a consistent thing."

Mystics forward Kiki Iriafen, who led the team with 24 points and attempted to diffuse the situation, supported her coach, saying, "Coach always has our back. He's going to do whatever to protect us. I was just trying my best to kind of diffuse it." Johnson reflected on advocating for his young team, the youngest in the WNBA with an average age of 23.4 years. While he acknowledged the need for a young roster to "earn your way in the W," he also expressed a belief that "when you come to a game, you shouldn't have to lobby and advocate. ... Coaches coach, players play, officials officiate. It shouldn't be swayed one way or the other because anybody's in anyone's ear." He clarified that despite the day's events, this remains his general approach.

The Mystics, currently holding a 4-5 record, are scheduled to host the 5-5 Indiana Fever in their next game on Monday.
