Shock Exit: McKenna Steps Down from Ipswich After Double Promotion Glory

Kieran McKenna has officially stepped down as manager of Ipswich Town after a highly successful five-season tenure, the club confirmed on Wednesday. McKenna, aged 40, has made the decision to take a break from football management after dedicating half a decade to Portman Road. His time at the club was marked by an extraordinary run of achievements, including guiding the Blues to three promotions in just four years, notably securing two ascensions to the prestigious Premier League.

McKenna's departure comes after he successfully secured Ipswich's return to England's top flight for a second time under his leadership, culminating in promotion celebrations that swept through Suffolk at the close of the 2025-26 campaign. In a club statement, McKenna expressed his sentiments: "It is with a mixture of gratitude, pride, sadness and contentment that I have decided to step down from the honour of managing this historic football club." He further added, "To manage this club has been an absolute privilege. Over the last five seasons we have been on an incredible journey that has brought so many of the best experiences in my professional and personal life." The Northern Irishman emphasized his desire to dedicate time to his family after the intensity of the role, stating, "After giving so much to the role over the previous five seasons, I now look forward to taking a break from management and dedicating some time to my family, who have been with me every step of my career so far."

McKenna initially joined Ipswich in November 2021 when the team was competing in League One, transitioning from his role as assistant manager at Manchester United. His impact was immediate and profound. In his first full season in charge, he achieved automatic promotion to England's second tier, the Championship. He then replicated this remarkable feat the following year, as Ipswich finished second in the 2023-24 Championship season, earning their place in the Premier League. Although the club faced relegation from the top flight in the 2024-25 season, McKenna's resilient side quickly recovered from a slow start in the subsequent Championship campaign, finishing as runners-up and securing an immediate return to England's highest division.

Ipswich chairman Mark Ashton reflected on McKenna's impact, stating, "It's been a true honour to stand side-by-side with Kieran over these five years and watch him grow and achieve so much. I know just how much of himself he has given to his job and he should be incredibly proud of all he has achieved. I know I am." Ashton acknowledged the sadness of the departure but respected McKenna's decision, adding, "Like so many, I am of course gutted that our journey together has come to an end, but I understand and respect the decision he has made after five incredibly intense years." As of now, Ipswich Town has not yet confirmed who will take charge of the club as they prepare for their Premier League opener in August.
