Senator Warren Slams Amazon MGM’s $40M ‘Melania’ Bid as ‘Bribery,’ Studio Denies Wrongdoing!

Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren has leveled serious accusations of “bribery in plain sight” against Amazon MGM Studios, alleging that the media giant engaged in illicit practices by spending lavishly to acquire and market a documentary about former First Lady Melania Trump. Amazon MGM Studios, however, strongly refutes these claims, asserting that its actions were entirely legitimate and proper.
The controversy began in March when Senator Warren, alongside Representative Hank Johnson (D-Ga.), initiated an investigation into whether Amazon MGM’s substantial investment in the film, titled “Melania,” constituted a “corrupt pay-to-play arrangement with the Trump administration.” The studio reportedly paid an unprecedented $40 million to acquire the documentary rights and an additional $35 million for marketing efforts. Notably, Senator Warren highlighted that Amazon MGM’s bid was a remarkable $26 million higher than that of the next-highest bidder, Disney. Despite this considerable outlay, the film, which premiered theatrically in January, concluded its run with a global box office total of $16.6 million, a sum far from sufficient for Amazon MGM to break even, especially considering that exhibitors typically retain half of ticket sales.
In a letter dispatched to Amazon on March 15, the lawmakers explicitly questioned the deal’s legality, stating, “The fact that Amazon is seeking favorable treatment from the Trump Administration while paying a far-above-market sum to produce and promote the Trump family’s film raises questions about Amazon’s exposure under federal anti-bribery law.” They emphasized the public’s right to assurance that powerful corporations are not exploiting financial resources to gain political influence or favorable treatment. Federal anti-bribery law prohibits offering “anything of value,” including business opportunities, to elected officials or their close associates with the intent of influencing official acts. Warren and Johnson pressed Amazon to provide a clear explanation for the $40 million payment and to confirm whether discussions about the bid occurred directly with Melania Trump or any member of the administration.
Amazon, in its defense, vehemently rejected the bribery allegations. Brian Huseman, Amazon’s VP of public policy, issued a statement on March 30 asserting that the company’s decision to license “Melania” was founded on “the access, the story, and its cultural and historical relevance.” He maintained that Amazon regularly releases documentaries on significant cultural and historical figures across the political spectrum and that the acquisition followed a “thorough and competitive bidding process.” Huseman further explained that “‘Melania’ gave us the opportunity to tell a story that’s never been told before, with unprecedented access to a historic presidential transition through the perspective of the First Lady.”
Senator Warren, however, was not appeased by Amazon’s response, criticizing it as reeking “of desperation to please Donald Trump.” She challenged Amazon to clarify why, if the deal was genuinely competitive and uncorrupt, it reportedly paid three times more than its nearest competitor. Warren posited that the “logical explanation is that Amazon is trying to buy the President’s favor by dumping millions into the Trump family’s pockets,” reiterating her conviction that this scenario constitutes “bribery in plain sight” and demanding immediate answers from Amazon to Congress and the American people.
Further bolstering their concerns, the lawmakers pointed to Amazon’s financial contributions to the Trump ecosystem, including a $1 million donation to his inauguration fund following the 2024 election and an undisclosed sum for the construction of a new “gold-encrusted” ballroom in the White House. They also highlighted the extensive financial stakes Amazon and its founder, Jeff Bezos, hold in various matters currently before the administration, ranging from an antitrust lawsuit recently settled with the Federal Trade Commission to international trade deals and federal contracts.
Representative Johnson echoed these sentiments, expressing a fear that "oligarchs and tech bros" are wielding dangerous levels of power and influence through their largess to a "transactional and corrupt president." He contended that Amazon’s “nothing-to-see-here” response only intensified these fears, suggesting that transparency would have been offered if there was truly nothing amiss. The "Melania" documentary itself garnered critical headlines and fueled speculation that it was a concerted effort by the retailer to curry favor with the current administration, a pattern observed with other media companies. For instance, Paramount paid $16 million to settle a lawsuit with Trump, and Disney issued a $15 million check to Trump’s presidential library to resolve a defamation lawsuit. Despite these controversies, an Amazon MGM studio spokesperson initially defended the acquisition by stating, “We licensed the film for one reason and one reason only — because we think customers are going to love it.”
