Hyundai and Genesis Gear Up for Electrified, Off-Road, and High-Performance U.S. Dominance!
Hyundai and Genesis are set for a major product expansion in the U.S., launching 58 new vehicles by 2030. This blitz includes the 2028 Santa Fe EREV with 600 miles of range, new body-on-frame SUVs, and an array of N performance models, alongside advanced battery technology and autonomous vehicles.
Hyundai Motor Company and its luxury division, Genesis, are poised for an extensive product offensive in the United States, with plans to introduce a combined 58 new vehicles by 2030. This ambitious strategy, unveiled by Hyundai President and CEO Jose Muñoz at the company's 2026 CEO Investor Day in Seoul, South Korea, encompasses a diverse range of powertrains and vehicle types, including Extended Range Electric Vehicles (EREVs), hybrids, body-on-frame vehicles, N performance models, and even commercial vans.
Hyundai, as a full-line automaker, will spearhead this initiative with 36 new vehicles slated for the U.S. market by 2030, with new SUVs leading the initial rollout. A significant highlight is the debut of the 2028 Hyundai Santa Fe EREV in the first half of 2027. This vehicle is anticipated to be the first EREV available in America since the BMW i3 REX exited production. The Santa Fe EREV will feature a dual-motor setup, likely providing all-wheel drive, paired with a 1.6-liter I-4 internal combustion engine acting as a range extender, collectively offering an impressive 600 miles of range.
A core innovation for Hyundai's upcoming electrified fleet, including EREVs, is a newly designed battery cell. This proprietary pack is claimed to boast twice the energy density of current nickel-cobalt-manganese (NCM) lithium batteries, along with reduced weight and faster charging times compared to existing E-GMP cars. Versions of this advanced battery pack are also planned for the company's next-generation electric vehicles.
Beyond EREVs, Hyundai's product expansion includes the compact Hyundai Tucson SUV, recently revealed in Korea and soon arriving stateside. The new Tucson will be both longer and wider, offering a hybrid powertrain generating 242 hp and 280 lb-ft of torque. It also introduces Hyundai's evolving styling direction, characterized by bolder, more exaggerated lines, a boxier profile, and the latest Pleos infotainment system, which first appeared in the 2028 Genesis GV90. On the car front, the next-generation Hyundai Elantra, also unveiled in South Korea, is expected to reach the U.S., featuring a blockier aesthetic, slim headlights, and flared fenders, creating a retro-futuristic appeal, capitalizing on the model's consistent popularity.
Beginning in 2028, Hyundai plans to introduce its first body-on-frame SUVs. Concepts like the Boulder, a traditional off-road SUV akin to the Ford Bronco, Jeep Wrangler, or Toyota 4Runner, and the Crater, a rally-inspired high-performance off-roader, hint at the brand's new direction. Given Hyundai's strategy of building multiple vehicles on each platform, this investment will likely yield a range of body-on-frame offerings, including a pickup truck.
Hyundai also eyes the large commercial van market in the U.S. as a growth area. Globally, the company produces the Staria, a potential candidate, with reports suggesting talks between Hyundai and GM for licensing the Staria to Chevrolet. Other existing options include the cab-forward Porter work pickup/van, though less likely for the U.S. in its current form, and the large commercial Solati, which, in its next generation, could compete with models like the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter and Ford Transit.
Performance enthusiasts can anticipate seven new N models by 2030, including a small SUV and another high-performance all-wheel-drive variant. Hyundai is also launching a new N subbrand designed to bridge the gap between entry-level N-Line models and track-focused full N vehicles. This subbrand will offer N-level powertrains with more daily-driver-friendly characteristics, such as softer suspensions and more comfortable interiors. Furthermore, Hyundai announced the delivery of autonomous Ioniq 5 vehicles, built for Waymo, commencing this year, marking the company's increasing commitment to autonomous driving technologies for both ridesharing and consumer markets.
