Sadio Mané's Sweet Success: Football Star Invests $20.4M in Mango Empire!
Senegalese football star Sadio Mané has broken ground on SM10 Agro, a $20.4 million agro-industrial venture in his hometown of Bambali. The project aims to transform the Casamance region into an agricultural hub, creating jobs and processing local produce like mangoes for domestic and international markets. Mané views this as a deeply personal effort to give back to his community.
Senegalese football star Sadio Mané has embarked on a deeply personal and impactful venture with the official groundbreaking of SM10 Agro in his hometown of Bambali. With a significant investment of 11.7 billion CFA francs, equivalent to approximately $20.4 million, the Al-Nassr forward aims to transform the southern Casamance region into a vibrant agricultural and industrial hub, addressing long-standing challenges and creating substantial opportunities for his community.
For Mané, the SM10 Agro project is more than just an investment; it is a testament to his enduring connection to his roots. Reflecting on the foundation stone laying ceremony, attended by National Assembly President Ousmane Sonko and local dignitaries, Mané expressed profound emotion. He stated that Bambali, the village where he was born, grew up, and learned the values that guide him, is where his dreams began. His ambition extends beyond his football achievements, as he desires to be remembered for creating opportunities for the families and young people of Bambali and all of Casamance, viewing the project as a way to help write the next chapter of their history.
The ambitious development spans 500 hectares and directly targets a critical issue in the Sédhiou region: the annual loss of up to 40% of local mango harvests due to inadequate storage and processing infrastructure. SM10 Agro plans to mitigate this by planting 78,000 Kent mango trees and constructing four state-of-the-art facilities. These facilities will not only prevent post-harvest losses but also add significant value by processing raw produce into various products such as mango pulp, purée, dried mango, and mango butter. There are also plans to process guava, further diversifying the project's output.
With an impressive annual processing capacity of 8,500 tonnes, SM10 Agro is poised to supply both domestic markets and to export its high-quality processed goods across Africa, Europe, and the Middle East. Beyond its manufacturing capabilities, the complex is designed to be a comprehensive agricultural ecosystem, featuring an agricultural training centre, a dedicated research laboratory, and facilities to support agro-tourism, fostering innovation and skill development within the region.
The project is set to be a major catalyst for local employment, projected to create 1,000 direct jobs upon full launch, with potential to scale up to 2,500 local opportunities over time. Supported by Senegal’s investment promotion agency, APIX, the construction phase is anticipated to last 18 months, with operations scheduled to commence in early 2027. Following the ceremony in Bambali, Mané further demonstrated his commitment by traveling to Dakar to personally present the SM10 Agro project to His Excellency President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, expressing his gratitude for the President's attentive consideration of this project so close to his heart.
