Rock Legend Ian Gillan Rushed to Hospital, Deep Purple Gigs Scrapped
Deep Purple frontman Ian Gillan has been hospitalized due to a medical emergency, leading the legendary rock band to postpone two concerts in Germany. Fans in Leipzig and Hamburg will need to await rescheduled dates, as the band works to accommodate their "SPLAT! world tour" amidst this unforeseen health issue.
Legendary British rock band Deep Purple has been forced to postpone two upcoming concerts in Germany following a medical emergency involving its iconic frontman, Ian Gillan. The band announced on Saturday, October 31, that their scheduled performance at QI Arena in Leipzig that evening, as well as an upcoming show at Sporthalle Hamburg, would not proceed as planned. This decision stems directly from Gillan's current hospitalization due to an undisclosed medical emergency.
Deep Purple, which currently comprises Ian Gillan on vocals, Simon McBride on guitar, Roger Glover on bass, Ian Paice on drums, and Don Airey on keyboards, expressed "great disappointment" in its statement shared via Instagram. While confirming Gillan's hospitalization, the band did not provide further details regarding his condition or an estimated timeline for his release. They acknowledged the short notice of the announcement and shared the disappointment of their fans in Leipzig and Hamburg.
The band reassured fans that they are actively working to find "a suitable time to reschedule" both postponed concerts, and all tickets purchased for the original dates will remain valid for the new performances. Deep Purple has been actively touring for its "SPLAT! world tour" since late summer, with a busy schedule that includes additional dates across Europe, the United Kingdom, South America, and Mexico through late December.
Ian Gillan holds a significant place in Deep Purple's history, having served as the band's lead vocalist during multiple tenures, with his initial stint beginning in 1969. He is widely recognized as the voice behind some of the British rock group’s most enduring and best-known hits, such as the anthemic "Smoke on the Water" and the high-energy "Highway Star."
This health concern within the Deep Purple family follows closely on the heels of another recent medical event involving a former band member. Just weeks prior to Gillan's hospitalization, former Deep Purple bassist and vocalist Glenn Hughes underwent a significant 10-hour open-heart surgery. Hughes, who had announced his retirement from touring earlier in the year, provided an update in mid-October, confirming he was recovering at home after the extensive procedure.
