Regional Tensions Soar: Ghana Issues Urgent South Africa Travel Warning Over Xenophobia

The Government of Ghana has issued a stark travel advisory, urging its nationals to avoid non-essential travel to South Africa. This advisory, announced on Monday, June 1, comes in response to what Ghana describes as an escalation in xenophobic attacks specifically targeting Africans within South Africa.

Reports indicate that these violent incidents are linked to groups characterized as anti-immigrant vigilantes. The consequences of these attacks have been severe, leading to injuries, forced business closures, widespread looting, and significant property loss for those affected.

In light of these developments, Ghana has already initiated several diplomatic actions. These include formal protests lodged at the highest levels, the summoning of the South African Acting High Commissioner in Accra, and an appeal to the African Union for intervention. Furthermore, the Ghanaian government has undertaken the evacuation of some of its nationals from South Africa to ensure their safety.

Ghanaian authorities have also provided specific guidance for their citizens currently residing in South Africa. They are strongly advised to maintain consistent contact with the Ghana High Commission to receive essential consular support and timely security updates. Concurrently, Ghana has called upon South African authorities to ensure the protection of all affected groups and to rigorously enforce law and order to prevent further incidents.

The government's statement explicitly reiterates its counsel: "The Government of Ghana advises Ghanaian nationals to exercise extreme caution in their travel plans and avoid non-essential travel to South Africa until further notice," highlighting ongoing security concerns. Ghana has affirmed its commitment to collaborate with South African authorities to facilitate the safe return of its citizens, reinforcing its overarching focus on safeguarding the well-being of its nationals abroad.
