Epic News: Major Fantasy Franchise Confirmed for New Series Adaptation

The current television landscape is experiencing a significant fantasy boom, with numerous popular novel series being acquired for adaptations. Joining this trend, the immensely popular and long-running "Warrior Cats" series is set to make its screen debut as an animated television series.

Reports confirm that the adaptation will be showrun by A.C. Bradley, known for her work on Marvel's "What If?", and directed by Rodrigo Blaas, acclaimed for "Trollhunters." This marks a significant milestone for the franchise, which has garnered a massive global following since its debut in 2003, selling over 90 million copies worldwide.

The "Warrior Cats" literary saga consists of nine distinct "arcs," each comprising six books. The upcoming animated series will specifically adapt the very first arc, titled "The Prophecies Begin."

The series is being developed by the Chinese media conglomerate Tencent Video, with a co-production effort alongside publisher Coolabi Group. It is anticipated to be available for streaming in 2028 within Tencent's extensive Asian sphere of influence. However, a streaming home for the series in other parts of the world has not yet been announced.

This isn't the first time an adaptation of "Warrior Cats" has been in the works. Approximately a decade ago, Harry Potter producer David Heyman had optioned the novels for a hybrid live-action/computer-animated film, but that project ultimately did not come to fruition.

The "Warrior Cats" books, penned by Erin Hunter (a collective pseudonym for a group of writers), delve into the lives of several warring clans of feral cats inhabiting a forest. These five distinct clans—ThunderClan, WindClan, RiverClan, ShadowClan, and SkyClan—are each endowed with special, often supernatural, abilities. The narratives explore not only internecine conflicts between the clans but also external threats posed by rogue cats, menacing packs of rats, and even a terrifying mountain lion.

A core element of the "Warrior Cats" mythology involves the afterlife: heroic cats who fall in battle ascend to become part of the StarClan, whose spirits frequently offer guidance to the living. Conversely, villainous cats are condemned to the desolate and hellish Dark Forest. The series is celebrated for its expansive cast of characters and its rich, intricate historical lore. Prior to this animated TV series, the "Warrior Cats" universe has also seen adaptations into manga, graphic novels, and video games, fostering a considerable and active social media presence. Coolabi Group, a co-producer, recently expanded the franchise's reach by partnering with Bonkers Toys to launch the first "Warrior Cats" toyline.

Fans can look forward to the "Warrior Cats" animated series premiering in 2028. Further updates will be provided by Collider.
