Amazon Unleashes Star-Studded Slate: Michael B. Jordan Leads Massive Prime Video Announcements

The long-anticipated television adaptation of Rebecca Yarros' best-selling "The Empyrean" romantasy book series, "Fourth Wing," has officially been ordered to series at Amazon's Prime Video. The announcement was a highlight of Amazon's annual upfront presentation to TV advertisers in New York, where executive producer Michael B. Jordan revealed the series pickup. Jordan, a recent Oscar winner, was joined on stage by author Rebecca Yarros, director Lisa Joy, and showrunner Meredith Averill, marking a significant moment for the highly anticipated adaptation.
"Fourth Wing" plunges viewers into the brutal world of Basgiath War College, where the stark rule dictates: graduate or die. The narrative centers on twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail, whose life takes an unexpected turn when her mother, a formidable general, commands her to join the ranks of hundreds of hopeful candidates striving to become elite dragon riders of Navarre. This compelling premise, combined with the global phenomenon sparked by Yarros' books, has captivated millions of readers and built an intensely passionate fanbase.
The "Empyrean" saga began with the New York Times best-seller "Fourth Wing," released in May 2023, followed by its sequel "Iron Flame" in November 2023. The third installment, "Onyx Storm," is set for January 2025, with plans for a total of five books, though titles and release dates for the remaining two have not yet been announced.
The journey to bring "Fourth Wing" to the screen has been carefully curated. Amazon MGM Studios, after acquiring the rights, collaborated with Michael B. Jordan's Outlier Society production company to assemble the right creative team. This includes Lisa Joy, co-creator of HBO's "Westworld," who will executive produce and direct the first episode, and Meredith Averill, co-creator of Netflix’s "Locke & Key," who serves as showrunner. Additional executive producers include Outlier president Elizabeth Raposo, Jonathan Nolan and Athena Wickham of Kilter Films, and Liz Pelletier and Sherryl Clark from Premeditated Productions. Stefano Agosto, Outlier Society's EVP of TV, will co-executive produce. The series, initially put into development in October 2023, saw a change in showrunners in September when Averill took over after Moira Walley-Beckett’s departure in the summer of 2024.
Rebecca Yarros expressed her enthusiasm for the project, stating, "I’m thrilled to be working with this dedicated, experienced team and grateful for their passion for both the books and the readership behind them." Peter Friedlander, Head of Global Television at Amazon MGM Studios, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the series as "one of the most anticipated adaptations in the world" and emphasizing the team's commitment to honoring the story and its fans.
The "Fourth Wing" announcement was part of a larger slate of reveals at Amazon's upfront presentation, which featured star power from artists like Diplo and Kacey Musgraves, and appearances by figures such as Oprah Winfrey, Ice Spice, and Chris Pratt. Among other significant programming news, Prime Video announced a Season 5 renewal for "Reacher," a series pickup for the romantic drama "Rose Hill," Aaron Paul joining "Fallout," Nia DaCosta boarding "Sex Criminals," and premiere dates for "The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power" Season 3 and the spy show "Ride or Die." "The Terminal List" star Chris Pratt also announced that Season 2 of his military drama would launch on October 21, more than four years after its debut. Beyond "Fourth Wing," Michael B. Jordan is also involved in other Amazon projects, including "The Greatest," a Muhammad Ali series for Prime Video, the "Creed" spinoff "Delphi," and an upcoming remake of "The Thomas Crown Affair," in which he will also star. The event concluded with Amazon ad sales boss Alan Moss, joined by Arnold Schwarzenegger and director Adam Shankman, promoting Schwarzenegger's upcoming Amazon movie "The Man with the Bag," where he plays Santa Claus.
