Hollywood Goes Sci-Fi: Amazon MGM Studios Unveils Groundbreaking AI Series Fund!

Amazon MGM Studios, in collaboration with Amazon Web Services (AWS), has launched a significant new initiative to advance “cinematic” entertainment through artificial intelligence, emphasizing that these tools are designed to empower human creative professionals rather than replace them. This initiative introduces the GenAI Creators’ Fund, which provides essential funding and access to cutting-edge AI production tools for filmmakers, digital creators, and tech startups aiming to develop premium television shows and movies.

A core component of this strategy is Project Nara, hailed as the industry's first purpose-built AI production platform specifically designed for visual storytelling. Albert Cheng, Amazon MGM Studios’ chief operating officer, underscored the human-centric philosophy, stating that AI tools are meant to unlock creative possibilities for TV shows and movies that would otherwise be unattainable. Project Nara, exclusively available to recipients of the GenAI Creators’ Fund, functions as a collaborative workspace. It integrates advanced AI production agents with established production tools already widely used by creators, such as Maya, Blender, Nuke, Unreal Engine, and Adobe’s suite of products. The platform is built on a model-agnostic architecture, cleverly combining the best available third-party video models with proprietary models, and also features robust provenance tracking to safeguard intellectual property.

The GenAI Creators’ Fund has already greenlit three animated series for Prime Video as proof-of-concept pilots and shorts, with the potential for full project development. These include “Punky Duck” from Jorge R. Gutierrez, known for “The Book of Life”; “Love, Diana Music Hunters” from Albie Hecht of pocket.watch, a former Nickelodeon president; and “Cupcake & Friends” from BuzzFeed Studios. While premiere dates for these series on Prime Video have not yet been announced, their loglines offer a glimpse into their creative premises: “Punky Duck” follows a punk duck and his best friend, Smiley Cat, through an exaggerated Los Angeles filled with alien invasions and supernatural mayhem; “Love, Diana Music Hunters” features K-pop space-traveling musicians on a mission to restore music on Planet Goo; and “Cupcake & Friends” explores the hilarious challenges of a sleepover. Beyond animation, Amazon MGM Studios is also supporting a live-action short creator.

Cheng noted that in all AI-enabled projects, human actors and voice actors are actively involved, reinforcing the collaborative nature of this technological integration. The studio presented its initial partners with a five-week deadline to complete their pilots, demonstrating the potential for expedited production timelines. This faster workflow allows directors to visualize specific scenes much earlier in the production process, enabling timely creative adjustments even before principal photography begins. Cheng highlighted that Project Nara is expected to significantly reduce overall production costs and accelerate project completion.

Samira Panah Bakhtiar, GM of media and entertainment, games, and sports for AWS, emphasized Amazon’s distinctive advantage as both a studio and a technology company. She pointed out that Amazon has meticulously constructed the industry’s sole end-to-end AI content creation ecosystem, encompassing everything from infrastructure and creative tools to content distribution and funding. This comprehensive approach, exemplified by Project Nara, showcases how AWS empowers filmmakers to integrate AI across the entire creative pipeline, from initial concept to final screen, utilizing a diverse array of familiar models and tools within a cloud environment trusted by the entertainment industry. The new initiative was formally announced at the 2026 AI on the Lot event held at Culver Studios.
