Opportunity Africa Kicks Off Bold Campaign to Spotlight Africans on Africa Day

On Africa Day, May 25, 2026, Opportunity Africa, a collaborative initiative convened by Africa No Filter, Brand Africa, and various partners including the African Union, officially launched the #NotWaiting campaign. This pan-African movement is dedicated to showcasing the people, innovative ideas, thriving businesses, and impactful initiatives that are actively propelling the continent forward. The campaign specifically calls upon Africans across the continent and its diaspora to highlight the existing progress already shaping Africa’s future, thereby asserting a narrative of proactive development.

The fundamental premise of #NotWaiting is rooted in the belief that a transformative shift in self-perception among Africans will inevitably lead to a change in how the world views Africa. Currently, vibrant entrepreneurial activity sees Africans building globally competitive companies, creative minds shaping culture, and communities driving local innovation. A new generation is actively redefining the very essence of African ambition. However, these compelling stories frequently remain obscured by dominant narratives that disproportionately focus on crises, deficiencies, and limitations.

The campaign's manifesto directly addresses this imbalance. It aims to forge a collective movement among Africans who commit to amplifying what is working, celebrating those who are building, and making visible where tangible progress is occurring. Participation in the #NotWaiting campaign is straightforward: individuals are invited to post stories, highlight people, and share ideas they believe warrant greater visibility, utilizing the designated hashtag #NotWaiting. Further engagement is encouraged through the campaign's website, www.notwaiting.africa, where participants can sign the campaign Manifesto, share their personal stories, and formally join the burgeoning movement. To ensure sustained momentum, the campaign will recur on the 25th of every month, creating a regular opportunity for Africans to collectively flood the internet with uplifting stories of progress, creativity, innovation, and opportunity emanating from both the continent and the diaspora.

Moky Makura, Executive Director of Africa No Filter, articulated the core vision, stating, “#NotWaiting is about making our stories more visible to Africans first. Because if we begin to look at ourselves differently, the world will see us differently too.” Echoing this sentiment, Thebe Ikalafeng, Founder of Brand Africa and Chancellor of Sol Plaatje University, emphasized the critical need for this initiative. “Africa cannot build confidently while constantly reflecting itself through narratives of deficiency. #NotWaiting is a statement of confidence from a continent already in motion, and a reminder that Africa’s image should be shaped by its people, not inherited perceptions.” Faith Adhiambo, Senior Communication Officer – Agenda 2063 at the African Union, speaking on behalf of AU Director of Communication Leslie Richer, reinforced the message, asserting, “Africa Day has always represented belief in Africa’s future and pride in Africa’s identity. #NotWaiting captures the energy of a generation that is no longer waiting to be seen, validated or defined by others. Africans are already building the future they want, and this campaign helps make that visible to us and to the world.”
