The Doctor Is Back: New 'Doctor Who' Era Promises 'Line of Duty'-Style Reboot!

The beloved science fiction franchise Doctor Who is undergoing a significant transition for its main series, with the BBC initiating a competitive tender process to find a new producer. This move comes as Russell T Davies and Bad Wolf step away, effectively putting the entire show out to tender and asking major British television producers to pitch their visions for the show's next era. The main series is currently on hiatus, following previous seasons and a recent period where its future was uncertain, and is now expected to return to screens in 2028 or 2029, with a new update on its production scheduled for March 2027.

Among the notable contenders is Jed Mercurio, the acclaimed creator behind series like "Line of Duty" and "Bodyguard." Mercurio's production company, Hat Trick Mercurio, has submitted a proposal with him attached as an executive producer. Mercurio brings prior science fiction experience, having created the 1998 BBC series "Invasion: Earth." Another intriguing proposal comes from STV Studios, which has teamed with Screen Scotland on a bid that would move Doctor Who's production to Scotland for Season 17. This relocation would fulfill the BBC's stipulation for the next version of the show to be produced outside of London – a departure from its previous home in Wales for much of its modern revivals – and would align with the BBC's commitment to spend £100 million on drama production in Scotland over three years.

Other production companies are also actively participating in the tender process. World Productions, for instance, has submitted its own separate proposal through ITV Studios, while two BBC Studios labels are also anticipated to be in contention. However, not all potential bidders were interested; Deadline reports that A24 UK, Playground, Mammoth Screen, New Pictures, Big Talk Studios, Expectation, and Quay Street have all declined to bid. Some producers cited concerns regarding the rights on offer and the substantial amount of work required to rebuild the show's infrastructure.

In parallel to the main series' competitive tender, the Doctor Who franchise is expanding with an entirely new animated spin-off titled "Doctor Who: TARDIS Crew." This project is specifically designed for preschoolers and their families, offering a distinct style and potentially a separate continuity from the main live-action series. Co-produced by the BBC and the multi-Emmy and BAFTA-winning animation studio Blue Zoo, known for titles such as "The Adventures of Paddington" and "LEGO City: No Limits," "TARDIS Crew" will consist of 52 eleven-minute episodes.

The synopsis for "Doctor Who: TARDIS Crew," created for CBeebies viewers, details adventures through time and space with a young Time Lord Doctor and his friends Hannah, Beastie, and Toast-IE. Traveling aboard the iconic TARDIS, they are set to encounter incredible creatures, discover amazing new worlds, and come face-to-face with legendary Doctor Who foes, including the Daleks. The series aims to introduce new viewers to the Whoniverse through themes of friendship, teamwork, and quick thinking. While a definitive release date is not yet confirmed, it is scheduled to premiere in late 2027 or 2028 on BBC iPlayer and CBeebies, with details about its international release still pending.
