Reacher Replacement Mania: Hit Series Dominates Streaming on Prime Video & Paramount+

Recent cinematic and streaming releases showcase the diverse careers of actors Mark Wahlberg and Chris Pratt, with both experiencing a mix of critical reception and audience engagement across new projects and enduring classics. While new films vie for attention, the persistent popularity of older titles highlights their lasting impact.

Mark Wahlberg has had a notable year, including the release of the action comedy Balls Up on Prime Video in April, co-starring Paul Walter-Hauser. Despite a mostly mediocre reception from critics and audiences, the film topped streaming charts for weeks. Wahlberg also appeared on the big screen in By Any Means, a crime thriller with Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, which garnered only $16 million at the box office. Conversely, Wahlberg's 2007 action thriller Shooter, where he plays Bob Lee Swagger, continues to enjoy a cult following nearly 20 years after its release. Grossing $95 million against a $61 million budget, Shooter, directed by Antoine Fuqua and based on Stephen Hunter's novel Point of Impact, is currently available for streaming on Paramount Plus and Pluto TV. The film's synopsis describes Swagger, a top Marine sniper, being coaxed back into service to thwart a presidential assassination plot, only to be betrayed and embark on a mission of revenge against corrupt leaders.

Chris Pratt's 2026 has been equally busy and successful. His sci-fi thriller Mercy, co-starring Rebecca Ferguson and released on Amazon MGM, struggled at the box office with $54 million against a $60 million budget but became one of Prime Video's most-watched movies of the year. Pratt quickly found box office redemption with The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, which became the first feature film of 2026 to reach $1 billion globally, adding to his string of successful franchises like Guardians of the Galaxy and Jurassic World. Later this year, on November 25, Pratt is set to premiere Way of the Warrior Kid, an action comedy with Linda Cardellini on Apple TV. Before that, he reprised his role as James Reece in The Terminal List Season 2, now available on Prime Video. The streamer even held theatrical screenings for the premiere, citing its "old-school filmmaking" designed for the big screen.

The Terminal List shares similarities with another Prime Video series, Reacher, both centering on retired military operatives with maintained combat skills. While both shows premiered in 2022, Reacher has seen a faster release of new seasons, already wrapping up its fourth season as The Terminal List returns for its second. Ahead of Season 2's launch, The Terminal List Season 1 reached the #15 spot overall on Prime Video and entered the top 10 in territories like Australia and the UK.

A recurring 'Action Franchise Quiz' from Collider offers insights into different action hero archetypes, exploring which of four major franchises – John Wick, Fast & Furious, Mission: Impossible, or Die Hard – a user would best survive in. Each franchise represents a distinct approach to heroism, combat, and navigating peril.

The quiz describes the John Wick archetype as precision-driven with a grudge, disciplined, and immovable once provoked, using grief as fuel for technique. The Fast & Furious archetype emphasizes loyalty, family, and a disregard for physics, prioritizing the crew above all else. For Mission: Impossible, the hero is characterized by meticulous over-preparation, a strong sense of personal responsibility, and a refusal to accept impossible odds. Finally, the Die Hard hero is portrayed as an ordinary person in the wrong place at the wrong time, relying on stubbornness, sarcasm, and improvisation to survive against overwhelming odds.
