R5 000 Pensioner Grants? South Africa Debates SASSA Increase Ahead of Elections
South African pensioners' demand for a R5,000 old-age grant faces significant economic hurdles, with experts deeming such a substantial increase highly improbable given the current fiscal climate. Political promises of increased grants before elections are also challenged by the national budgetary cycle, which locks in current grant amounts until February 2027, making pre-election increases unlikely.
Beneficiaries of South Africa's old-age grant have expressed a strong desire for the grant to be increased to R5 000, prompting a critical evaluation of this expectation. University of Pretoria Professor Heinrich Bohlmann, from the Department of Economics, offered an expert perspective on the feasibility of such a significant raise.
Professor Bohlmann explained that an increase in the old-age grant to the R4 000 to R5 000 range would necessitate an additional R100 billion per year to the national budget. This substantial sum would be added to the current social grant budget of R292.8 billion and would further burden South Africa's already strained finances, which include R430 billion annually spent on servicing debt.
