President Museveni Welcomes Rugby Africa Officials, Emphasizes Uganda’s Readiness for 2025 Rugby Africa
President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has welcomed Mr. Herbert Mensah, the President of Rugby Africa, and his delegation to Uganda, emphasizing the country’s readiness to host the 2025 Rugby Africa Cup, a crucial tournament that also serves as a qualifier for the Rugby World Cup.
During a meeting at State Lodge, Nakasero, on July 7, 2025, President Museveni emphasized rugby’s role in promoting unity, discipline, and teamwork values he considers crucial for Uganda’s continued progress.
In his remarks, President Museveni praised rugby for its role in building national cohesion and for being a sport that emphasizes collective effort over individual success.
“In rugby, teamwork is key to victory, and that’s the spirit Uganda needs unity and shared purpose,” the President remarked.
The President also reflected on the tremendous strides Uganda has made since the country’s recovery from instability in the 1980s.
President Museveni stressed that peace and infrastructure development have laid the groundwork for the country’s growth in sports, particularly rugby.
The President pointed to Uganda’s increasing recognition in global sports, noting that the country’s infrastructure and peace made it an ideal host for major events like the Rugby Africa Cup.
Mr. Mensah expressed gratitude to President Museveni for his leadership and investment in rugby, praising the country’s rapid development in sports.
He also reminisced about a past encounter with the President, which left a lasting impact on him. He underscored that Rugby Africa is confident in Uganda’s capacity to host international competitions due to its infrastructure, peace, and commitment.
Dr. Jonathan Webb, the Vice-Chair of World Rugby, also commended Uganda’s commitment to rugby and sports development, expressing the organization’s eagerness to support Uganda’s efforts. Minister Peter Ogwang, the Minister of State for Sports, highlighted the significance of hosting the World Cup qualifier, not only as a sporting event but as an opportunity for Uganda to showcase its achievements on the global stage.
He also thanked First Lady Janet Museveni for her continuous support of the country’s sports sector.
With a growing sports infrastructure and a strong commitment to national development, Uganda is poised to host a successful Rugby Africa Cup, inspiring a new generation of athletes while further elevating its global standing in the world of sports.
