President Museveni Nominated as NRM Flag Bearer Ahead of 2026 General Elections
President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, on Saturday July 05, 2025, officially formalized his candidacy for the positions of National Chairman of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) and the party’s presidential flag bearer for the 2026 general elections at the NRM Electoral Commission headquarters in Kyadondo, Kampala.
The event, attended by enthusiastic party supporters and senior NRM officials, followed months of grassroots mobilization centered on the government’s Parish Development Model (PDM).
President Museveni, accompanied by First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports, Maama Janet Museveni, returned his nomination forms, having secured the required endorsements from at least 100 members of the NRM National Conference, as confirmed by NRM Electoral Commission Chairperson Dr. Tanga Odoi.
In his speech following the nomination, President Museveni reaffirmed his commitment to Uganda’s development, emphasizing the need for continuity in leadership to maintain political stability, security, and economic progress. He also highlighted the achievements of his administration, including economic growth and poverty reduction through programs like the PDM.
“I am here to continue the journey of national transformation, empower the youth, and eliminate corruption at all levels,” President Museveni said, addressing the gathered crowd.
The President also outlined his vision for Uganda’s future, emphasizing economic growth and anti-corruption measures, where he vowed to “wipe out corruption” if re-elected.
The nomination event drew a large crowd of supporters who celebrated his candidacy with song and dance. Accompanied by First Lady Janet Museveni, the President was received by Vice President Maj. (Rtd) Jessica Alupo, NRM First National Vice Chairperson Al-Hajji Moses Kigongo, Speaker of Parliament Rt. Hon. Anita Among, and Secretary General Rt. Hon. Richard Todwong, among other top NRM officials.
The nomination process came after extensive wealth creation tours centered on the Parish Development Model (PDM), during which local leaders and community members urged him to continue his leadership as President and Commander-in-Chief.
Additionally, supporters including Office of the National Chairman Hadijah Namyalo Uzeiye, expressed unwavering confidence in his leadership, citing Uganda’s socio-economic progress and stability under his rule stating “President Museveni is our sole candidate in the 2026 general elections.”
