Political Firestorm: Zambian Opposition Leader Brian Mundubile Detained, Blocked from International Travel!

Opposition figure Brian Mundubile was subjected to extensive police interrogation at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport (KKIA) following allegations that he was planning activities likely to destabilize the country. After many hours of detention at KKIA, Mundubile was subsequently taken to Ibex Hill Police Station for further questioning and possible detention.
During the interrogation at the airport, plain-clothed police officers, identifying themselves as intelligence personnel, pressed Mundubile on his associations. He was specifically queried about his last contacts with a number of notable individuals, including Mwata Kazembe, Valden Findlay, “Sparks,” a former intelligence Director-General, Saviour Chungu, Moses Katumbi, and former DRC President Joseph Kabila.
A significant detail of the questioning involved police asking Mundubile if he knew a village called Kashobwe in the Democratic Republic of Congo, to which he refuted any knowledge. According to sources close to the interrogation, the mention of Kashobwe alongside queries about Mwata Kazembe suggested that officers were attempting to establish a link between His Royal Highness Mwata Kazembe, Mundubile, and Katumbi.
Mundubile unequivocally refuted all allegations, stating he had not held any such talks or planned any activities that could destabilize the nation. He reportedly told the interrogating team, “How could I plan to harm the same country that I’m planning to govern.”
Despite being moved from the airport to Ibex Hill Police Station, Mundubile had not been formally arrested or charged with any offense as of 11 pm. Sources close to the situation indicated that police were considering charges of seditious practices and hate speech. His legal team expressed concern over his transfer to Ibex Police Station without an official call-out, with one lawyer noting the procedural irregularity.
As Mundubile's supporters gathered and swelled in numbers, chanting “we want peace,” the opposition leader himself issued a statement from Ibex Hill Police Station. He confirmed his presence there for questioning, assured the nation of his full cooperation with authorities, and promised to provide updates as more information becomes available, extending thanks for the support he received. Police have yet to formally state the reasons for blocking his travel and his subsequent move to the police station.
