PlayStation's Controversial Move: Deleting Purchased Digital Movies Sparks Outcry
Sony has begun notifying PlayStation Store customers that some digitally purchased movies will be removed from their libraries starting September 1, 2026. This action is due to an expiring licensing agreement with Studio Canal, with no apologies or refunds currently offered to affected users.
Sony is facing criticism after beginning to notify customers that previously purchased digital movies on the PlayStation Store will no longer be accessible. This decision stems from the expiration of a content licensing agreement with Studio Canal, effective September 1, 2026. Affected content will be removed from users' video libraries on that date.
A statement on the PlayStation Store website confirms this change, stating, “From September 1, 2026, due to our content licensing agreements, you will no longer be able to access your previously purchased content from Studio Canal, and it will be removed from your video library. Thank you.”
This move has sparked outrage among customers, particularly because Sony has not offered any apologies for the inconvenience caused, nor has it provided refunds to the affected accounts. The A.V. Club has reportedly reached out to PlayStation for an official comment on the situation, highlighting the growing concern over the permanence of digital purchases when licensing agreements expire.
