Kumho's Road Venture HT: The End of Winter Tire Swaps?
Kumho Tire introduces its new Road Venture HT, a 3PMSF-certified light truck and SUV tire designed to challenge top brands and potentially eliminate the need for dedicated winter tires. It promises reduced compromises in performance, with impressive wet/dry grip and a 75,000-mile warranty, aiming to be a versatile all-season solution.
Kumho Tire is actively striving to elevate its brand perception to rival industry leaders such as Michelin, Bridgestone, and Continental, positioning itself as a pioneer in tire innovation and engineering. As part of this strategic push, Kumho has unveiled a new line of light truck and SUV tires designed with advanced capabilities that may allow many consumers in northern regions to forgo the necessity of a dedicated set of winter tires.
Within the competitive tire market, Kumho is currently positioned among premium challengers like Goodyear, Pirelli, Yokohama, and Hankook. These brands are recognized for their excellent and continuously improving engineering, often optimizing products for specific strengths or price targets. This places them just below the vanguard of brands—Michelin, Continental, and Bridgestone—who lead in R&D investment and often introduce groundbreaking tire technologies. Kumho’s approach mirrors the past strategies of automotive brands like Hyundai and Kia, where significant technological breakthroughs and strategic design decisions were instrumental in enhancing their brand reputations.
A key feature of Kumho’s new offering, the Road Venture HT tire, is its 3-Peak Mountain Snowflake (3PMSF) designation. This certification signifies that the tire has successfully passed a rigorous packed-snow traction test, demonstrating a minimum of 12 percent traction improvement over a standard reference tire. Historically, achieving this designation has presented a challenge for many competitors, often necessitating compromises in critical areas such as treadwear, steering precision, rolling resistance, ride comfort, and tread noise. However, Kumho asserts that its proprietary advancements in compound chemistry, siping density, tread-block stiffness, and carcass design effectively mitigate these traditional compromises.
The Kumho Road Venture HT tire is backed by a substantial 75,000-mile warranty and is engineered to deliver low rolling resistance, making it compatible with electric vehicles (EVs). Furthermore, the company claims it offers quiet highway manners and enhanced wet performance. To validate some of these claims, the tire underwent testing at Evergreen Speedway near Seattle, Washington. The trials involved Toyota Tacoma SR5 pickups and Ford Explorer ST SUVs, with activities including 60-mph laps on a 5/8-mile oval track, as well as wet and dry autocross sessions conducted on the infield’s figure-eight and road course areas.
During these trials, the wet and dry grip of the Road Venture HT tire proved impressive, especially considering its performance characteristics nearing that of a snow tire. Even after an intense day of high-adrenaline dry autocross sessions, where significant tire noise was observed, the outer shoulders of the tires—which were maintained at placard pressures—appeared remarkably fresh. On the dry oval, the road noise generated by the tires was noted to be relatively similar to that of a stock vehicle fitment. It is important to note that the August testing environment in Seattle precluded any evaluation of the tire’s performance on snow, and it is reiterated that dedicated winter tires are still essential for optimal ice driving conditions. Additionally, no opportunity was provided to conduct direct comparative testing against the original equipment (OE) tires or any of the Road Venture HT’s primary competitors, which include tires like the Hankook Dynapro HT2, Continental TerrainContact H/T, Goodyear Wrangler Steadfast HT, Bridgestone Alenza AS Ultra, and Michelin Defender LTX M/S2. These rival brands typically carry a price premium of approximately 10–40 percent over the Kumho offering, meaning authoritative commentary on their relative merits could not be provided from this testing.
