Oasis Reunion On The Rocks? Watchdog Threatens Legal Action Over Tickets!

The highly anticipated Oasis reunion tour is set to kick off in 2025, with bassist Andy Bell confirming his involvement. Bell, known for his previous tenure with Oasis from 1999 to 2009 and later with Liam Gallagher's post-Oasis project Beady Eye, brings extensive experience to the reformed group. He will be joined by fellow Beady Eye bandmate and longtime collaborator Gem Archer, along with original Oasis guitarist Paul ‘Bonehead’ Arthurs and drummer Joey Waronker, completing a formidable live lineup for the band's return to the stage.
The legendary Manchester band has an extensive schedule of 41 dates booked for 2025, beginning with stadium shows across the UK and Ireland in July before expanding to multiple continents. A major highlight includes three sold-out performances at the Scottish Gas Murrayfield Stadium in Edinburgh on August 8, 9, and 12. The immense global demand for tickets was evident, with an astonishing 10 million people from over 100 countries attempting to purchase them, leading to a record-breaking sell-out. Support acts for the tour include Cast, Richard Ashcroft, Cage The Elephant, and Ball Park Music.
Despite the excitement, Oasis manager Alec McKinlay has definitively clarified that fans should not expect any new material or additional tour dates. McKinlay, also a director at Ignition and Big Brother Recordings, stated that "This is very much the last time around, as Noel’s made clear in the press," aiming to provide a chance for fans to see the band, particularly those who missed out previously. He added, “No, there’s no plan for any new music.” This statement directly contradicts earlier social media hints from Liam Gallagher, who had claimed a new album was "finished" and that he was "blown away" by Noel's contributions. McKinlay also shed light on the meticulous planning and secrecy surrounding the comeback, noting that a very limited group of trusted individuals kept the news under wraps, resulting in a "phenomenal" public reaction.
However, the massive ticket sale was not without significant controversy, drawing the attention of the UK competition watchdog. The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has threatened legal action against Ticketmaster, accusing the ticketing giant of using "misleading" methods during the sale of tickets for the Oasis reunion tour. The CMA's concerns center on two main issues. Firstly, Ticketmaster reportedly labeled certain seated tickets as ‘platinum’ and sold them for up to 2.5 times the price of equivalent standard tickets (e.g., £350 versus a £150 face value), without adequately explaining that these 'platinum' tickets offered no additional benefits and were often located in the same stadium areas. This practice allegedly misled customers into believing they were purchasing a superior product.
Secondly, the CMA investigated allegations that Ticketmaster failed to inform consumers about the existence of two different price categories for standing tickets. It is claimed that all cheaper standing tickets were sold first, with more expensive options released subsequently, leaving fans waiting without understanding the price disparity. The CMA had previously warned in March that Ticketmaster had "breached the law" and "misled fans."
In response to the widespread complaints over dynamic pricing, Oasis issued a statement clarifying their position. The band asserted that they "leave decisions on ticketing and pricing entirely to their promoters and management" and were "at no time had any awareness that dynamic pricing was going to be used." While acknowledging prior meetings between promoters, Ticketmaster, and the band's management aimed for a "fair experience" and the use of dynamic ticketing to curb touting, the band stated that "the execution of the plan failed to meet expectations." Many Scottish fans, particularly, voiced their frustration over paying significantly more for tickets than anticipated due to these sales tactics.
