NYC Inferno: Armed Suspect Shot by NYPD After Deadly Far Rockaway Home Explosion Claims Two Lives

A tragic incident unfolded in Far Rockaway, Queens, on Saturday when NYPD officers shot a 33-year-old man, Keegan Thompson, after he emerged from his burning home following a fiery explosion. Inside the residence, investigators later discovered two of his family members dead, police officials reported during an afternoon briefing.

The incident began around noon when officers responded to a 911 call reporting gunfire inside a home on Ocean Crest Boulevard. The caller, identified as Thompson’s wife, informed dispatchers that her husband was armed, had a history of mental illness, and had claimed to have "killed them."

Upon arrival, officers found Thompson's wife outside the home. She recounted hearing gunshots from a room inside, investigating, and seeing a body on a bed before she fled and called 911. She further warned officers that Thompson was armed with a shotgun. Patrol officers promptly requested the department’s Emergency Service Unit (ESU) and made multiple unsuccessful attempts to contact Thompson, who remained inside the residence.

At approximately 12:15 p.m., as ESU officers were preparing to enter the home, a "large fiery explosion" erupted. Within 15 to 20 seconds, Thompson emerged from the home, armed with a shotgun and wearing a tactical vest containing additional ammunition.

Officers issued "numerous verbal commands" for Thompson to drop his weapon and raise his hands. However, he did not comply, leading officers to open fire, striking him. Assistant Chief Christopher McIntosh did not specify whether Thompson had discharged his weapon during the confrontation.

Thompson was taken into custody and received immediate treatment at the scene before being transported to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center, where he is currently in critical but stable condition. Assistant Chief McIntosh clarified that Thompson has no prior criminal record and no documented history of mental health issues with the NYPD, a detail that contradicted his wife's initial statement. Responding officers were also taken to a hospital, though no details regarding their conditions were provided.

Following the altercation, investigators tragically discovered two family members dead inside the residence. Their identities were not immediately released, and the causes of death remain under investigation. The fire, which originated from the explosion, spread from the home, necessitating the evacuation of nearby houses.

The entire incident was captured on body-worn cameras and is currently under comprehensive review by the NYPD’s Force Investigation Division. Assistant Chief McIntosh commended the bravery of the responding officers, stating, "It can’t be overstated, the bravery of the officers who responded today. They responded to a 911 call not knowing what was waiting for them — and they ran toward the danger with no hesitation."
