Nollywood Mourns: Director Dimbo Atiya's Tragic Death Unites Stars in Grief
Nollywood filmmaker Dimbo Atiya, known for directing the television series <i>Sons of the Caliphate</i> and numerous other works, has passed away. Tributes poured in from across the industry, with actors and producers mourning the loss of one of the "greatest minds of the entertainment industry." Atiya's career spanned over 500 television episodes and several feature films, with a focus on stories from Northern Nigeria.
Nollywood filmmaker Dimbo Atiya, renowned for his significant contributions to the Nigerian entertainment industry, has passed away. The news of his death was initially announced on Thursday by movie producer Seun Oloketuyi via an Instagram post. Oloketuyi shared a picture of the director, stating, “Dimbo Atiya is dead The Top Nollywood Director passed on this morning Details later”.
Following the announcement, numerous Nollywood stars and colleagues expressed their grief and paid tribute to the late filmmaker. Mofe Duncan, who worked with Atiya on the series Sons of the Caliphate, shared a photo and wrote, “GOD NO!! NOT DIMBO!! NO! NO!! NO!!! I AM DEVASTATED!!! “ONE OF THE GREATEST MINDS OF THE ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY.” Maryam Booth echoed similar sentiments, stating her heart was heavy and acknowledging the profound impact Atiya made. Ali Nuhu simply wrote, “ADIEU Dimbo 💔”, while Stella Damasus expressed, “This one hit different. DIMBO! Hmmm. It is well.” Other actors like Uzee Usman and Susan Peters also mourned his passing on social media.
Dimbo Atiya began his career in 2008, having first studied Urban and Regional Planning before furthering his education at the New York Film Academy in the United States. Throughout his prolific career, he produced more than 500 television episodes and directed several feature films. He was particularly recognized for his storytelling that often centered on Northern Nigeria.
His notable works include the popular political drama series Sons of the Caliphate, which premiered on EbonyLife TV in 2016 and later gained a global audience through Netflix. Other significant projects include Halita, The Rishantes, Drawing Strength, Still Falling, The Plan, and Dala Dala. In 2022, The Rishantes, for which he served as co-creator, executive producer, writer, and director, won the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Award for Best Africa Magic Original Drama Series.
Prior to his death, Atiya was actively involved in new productions, with recent directing credits including Boxed, Moonshine, Loving Hanan, and Strong. As of the time of reporting, the cause of his death had not been publicly disclosed.
