NITDA Powers Up Digital Future: 3,600 Teachers Trained in Massive Literacy Drive

Nigeria's National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has embarked on a major nationwide digital literacy drive, successfully training 3,600 teachers across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory. This initiative equips educators to become 'master-trainers' in their communities, promoting the widespread adoption of digital skills and laying the foundation for a digitally empowered society.

The programme, under the banner of the “Digital Literacy for All” (DL4ALL) initiative, followed a multi-faceted approach. Participants completed several weeks of intensive virtual sessions, culminating in a focused two-day physical workshop held in Abuja. The 'train-the-trainer' model ensures these teachers return to their schools to cascade digital skills to colleagues and students, multiplying the initiative's impact.

NITDA stresses that DL4ALL is central to its mandate to bridge Nigeria’s digital divide. By equipping educators with modern tools and knowledge, the initiative aligns the nation’s education sector with global digital transformation trends, ensuring students and teachers remain competitive in the evolving 21st-century economy.

This programme complements other digital skills efforts in Nigeria, including collaborations between the Raspberry Pi Foundation and Google DeepMind earlier in 2025. That initiative targeted 3,150 secondary school teachers with AI and machine learning education, projected to reach over 150,000 students, highlighting growing investments in human capital and technology adoption.

Education experts affirm that these interventions are crucial. With digital classrooms and AI-powered learning tools becoming the norm, teachers must be proficient with emerging technologies. Pilot projects have shown generative AI can enhance student performance, emphasizing the urgent need for educator preparedness.

Moreover, teacher-training programmes like DL4ALL provide the backbone for national digital-economy ambitions, including the government’s ongoing 3 Million Technical Talent Programme (3MTT), which aims to develop a skilled technical workforce by 2027. By empowering teachers, the initiative fosters a multiplier effect that can accelerate inclusive tech readiness across Nigeria.
